I have no idea. I asked him about it, and his answer was that the computer got bricked by the upgrade. I wanted to see if it would boot to Linux Live, but he had put the computer into storage, so I have no way to know what actually happened.
I was the one who set up GWX Control Panel on his computer, and I explained everything to him as I was setting everything up, including why it was needed. But he isn't very computer savvy, so who knows what actually happened.
I think I read of some computers getting it even when blocked.
I don't think that I can either. When 7 came out I was happy with Vista and comparably unimpressed with 7 on top of being unemployed but I couldn't pass up the preorder sale. $100 for a retail pro upgrade license was too good to pass up. Now I'm glad that I did that although I didn't start using it full time until 2 years ago. I did run a dual boot and then a VM for a while but I didn't use it that much.
I'm not sure what I want to do with my Mom's computer when 7 goes out of support. I suppose I'll talk to her about it and see what she wants to do.

I am fine with this I bet in 2020 I will probably have win 10 and 365 comes default on it and if not I can still use windows 7 normally.
I have one laptop with Windows 7 and one with Windows 10. Upgraded other half's laptop to Windows 10 via clean install and he likes it. Me - I have never got over losing XP!I loved XP- loved the simplicity. I then loved Windows 7 and still do - occasionally I would load XP on a machine just to look at it and play with it lol - sad I know! But I go with the upgrades once security support ceases. At least there's been a longer transition between Windows 7 and Windows 10 to get used to Windows 10.
Have found a clean install of Windows 10 seems to work well on most machines (except Cedarview Atom processors which will only run Windows 7 and won't even run Linux). And possibly not on some older ones with Nvidia graphics but that may have improved.
Initially it seemed quite fast but after all the updates find it is no faster than Windows 7 now and sometimes even slower - depending on the machine.
Pros and Cons. I like that it's so easy to do a clean install whenever and no messing about with product keys with it being on the Motherboard after first install. I like that I don't have to look up every update to fine out what it is and what the issues are - the updates tend to go well. When there's a big update, if it doesn't go well - easy to do a reset or clean install again.
I don't like the feel of it but got used to it - I remove most of the start menu apps and just leave weather and news and add shortcuts to control panel, word and calculator etc. Don't like apps - but the odd one for photo editing has been quite good and easy to uninstall again.
Word - I have MS Word 2016 and that installed fine. I'm sticking with it as long as I can and won't pay an annual subscription - if it comes to that I'll use open office.
I like that Defender on Windows 10 is Microsoft Security Essentials and built in - so a layer of defence from scratch without having to install antivirus straight away on a new install. After that I replace it usually.
It isn't so bad when you see past the glitz! It's basically Windows 7 with some flashy stuff on top!
I detest adverts in apps so rarely use apps. It works and you can use it how you want.
I still prefer Windows 7 but will move on in 2020 - although the Cedarview laptop will be useless then - so will leave Windows 7 on that - it's basically for games for the sprog anyway and he's moved onto games consoles but still likes playing retro games on it.
Currently I have Windows 10 dual booted with Linux on my main laptop. Linux has gone the same way a bit - heavier, bigger distros and too much flashy stuff! Won't fit on smaller drives sometimes (even the lightest ones have got too big for an Eee 4GB) and not always compatible with older hardware either.
I will keep upgrading older laptops because some new ones seem pretty rubbish - as well as expensive. Blame the demise of Windows 7 on Apple! Microsoft had to compete with iphones etc.
Two years ago I'd have said I'd keep Windows 7 forever - but I've got over itStill haven't got over XP though
If I wanted an Apple, I would have upgraded to Windows 10
Already working with Linux (CentOS) with my engineering software, since Windows 10 pollutes my test network, and becomes a risk item.
If Linux is too bloated, there's always BSD. But it's not for the faint of heart.
