It's a UNIX based/derived OS (e.g. Windows, Linux, UNIX, etc.).
I think Mac OS X is based on it.

UNIX was the "Top Dog" in the days before PCs "took off".
It may still be "Number 1" on Mainframes (unless it has been replaced by Linux).

Technically OS X is based on NeXTSTEP which Steve Jobs worked on after he was forced to resign from Apple. He based it on BSD. Apple bought out his company and hired him back.

Yeah, it's an operating system. Most of the distros are too hard to set up, but there are a few user-friendly models. The best was True OS. I say was, because it is currently being forked to a server version and a desktop version. The latter will be called Trident, if it ever gets finished.

Right now the most user-friendly one is Ghost OS, which just changed itself, now being based on True OS. Confused? I've been running True for several months on a 10 y/o HDD that should have died long ago (rated bad by crystal disk). But True uses ZFS file system, which is self-healing. When that drive had windows on it, it ran hotter than Hades. With True, it barely gets warm.

BSD is also notable for being highly secure, even moreso than Linux.

Edit: By the way, BSD stands for Berkely Software Distributors.

The Next office release, Office 2019, is due at anytime in the next few months

Hopefully in one of those Windows 10 releases, MS will see fit to restore Aero Glass and Image Backup functionality.

As for Office 2010, I've been running Office 2016 Professional for the past two years.

There are a number of Unix-like operating systems based on or descended from the Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD) series of Unix variant options.

As for Aero glass, which I love, I have a beautiful glass theme on my Kubuntu desktop. It is even better than Windows 7's version. As is the Start Menu, which is breathtaking. And it comes with Libre Office installed. As good as MS Office any day. Yestrday I installed the latest version of it during a routine update. Updating in Kubuntu (or other versions of Ubuntu) is a breeze. Updates come as needed, you install them in a few minutes, and rarely have to restart.
