There are many who are pretty pissed at this. I just hope thay don't screw things up, but they probably will. Then it will be off to Bitbucket.
The European Commission approved on Friday the acquisition of software development tool maker GitHub by software giant Microsoft without conditions saying the purchase would not damage competition in the sector.
“The Commission found that the combination of Microsoft and GitHub’s activities on these markets would raise no competition concerns because the merged entity would continue to face significant competition from other players on both markets,” it said in a statement.

A corporation that historically despised open source and lived on the basis of proprietary software (and recently used very questionable practices on it) buying the leader of open source hosting website is a serious drawback for all those who like, use and write open source software. It's difficult to see how that won't damage the free software ecosystem.
As always, the judges go in favor of those with the most money.
