2019-03 Update for Windows 7 SP1 support notification (KB4493132)
-
I'm wondering if it might be prudent to stay off of the Internet on a Windows 7 installation around the time of Windows 7's end of life.
I worry about whether or not Microsoft will try to pull something. Perhaps it might be better for me to use TinyCore to access the Web at around that time.
Just wondering if anyone else has thought about this.
Hi Tharthan,
Yes it would be prudent. I agree with @townsbg that the nags will tend to increase in frequency as Jan. 14, 2020 draws closer; In the beginnings of Linux it may have been true that it was not the target of malware developers but as its usage has increased that is no longer true and Linux based malware is growing: Linux malware tiny core (google search)
Do you have your win7 up-to-date? I ask because you're only showing win7 HP in your system specs and don't have SP1 included.
Yes I have thought about it and even though my 7 machine has served me well the last 10years I'm going to update it to 10 by following the tutorial located in the header notice of every 7Forums page: Upgrade to Windows 10 from Windows 7 for Free | Tutorials And if for some reason it doesn't work out I have more than one back-up of what's on my 7machine so I could return if needed, I'm even thinking of creating a dual boot with 7 if it likes win 10.

Oh, that's my bad. Yes, I am using Service Pack 1.
I didn't think that it mattered to include that information, but I will change it now.

@Anak: I believe that you have to use your 7 license on 10 unless you want to buy 10. You might want to investigate if you can do a 7 dual boot. Regardless that tutorial is for an upgrade to 10. For a dual boot you will have to do a clean install.

Thanks for adding that bit of info, the regulars here depend on complete info in order to diagnose a problem. In my case I saw that you were concerned about security after the EOS and if you aren't up to date that just makes it worse so I asked the question.
It's like going to a doctor for an ailment, he can't offer sound treatment if you don't tell him / her everything that may pertain to your problem.

For the time being that's all I want, an upgrade and that tutorial will do that.
The MCT (Media Creation Tool) will walk my machine through the process and use my 7 license to convert to a 10 digital license. I do believe you are correct that if I want to dual-boot between 7 and 10 I'll have to do a clean install, I can't find it now but either I or I saw it asked about doing a dual and the only way was a clean install.

Hi
there might be a way
IF (OEM ONLY)
you are still using the base oem key, and the COA key has NOT been used
Upgrade to 10 with base use the COA for W7

Thanks Roy, I'll keep that in mind, my 7 machine is OEM.
I have the OEM key and tried looking for the COA, but couldn't find one. I never tried, can you ask MS for one?
-
Hi @Anak,
Not from MS, a) they wouldn't know it
b) No longer sold
