Facebook database holding 419 million user entries was posted online

Quote:
It seems it's quite hard to keep private data actually private, even for the almighty Facebook. A database with telephone numbers of possibly hundreds of millions of Facebook users was spotted online, totally unprotected. It is unknown who uploaded the database and why.

The database contained 419 million entries, according to Facebook, half of them are duplicates, meaning that it would be the data of several hundred million users. The database showed unique IDs of Facebook users, linked to their telephone numbers and in some cases also with name, gender and country. Facebook IDs are unique and can be traced back to accounts. According to a report from TechCrunch, the dataset had included 133 million records from U.S.-based Facebook users, 18 million from the U.K., and over 50 million from Vietnam...

I doubt anyone is shocked by these things anymore. Just another typical day for Facebook.

More and more, I see evidence that my initial inclination to have nothing to do with Facbook was the right one. Don't have an account and never will.

The concept of privacy is now a hollow, cynical joke.

I have an old HTC phone, Windows 6.5 (I think). The satellite data update (the one that prefetches satellite orbits 7 days in advance for quicker fixes) has worked perfectly on a daily basis for over 10 years.

Two days ago, the nasty message turned up: "Location must be turned on to activate the orbit data". The phone with an old O/S, has no location turn-on - you simply activate any GPS programme and wait for the fix. This means that my initial fixes are now forever slowed down.

Who is responsible for this intrusion of privacy ? Google, of course; it has simply bought the update facility to add to its' ability to track everyone it can. These people are truly malicious; this is no "pretend" accident such as Facebook experiences weekly.

None of us are shocked. I forwarded it to my friends who have Facebook accounts, but I know they won't leave.

ian50--is that a smart-phone? They're still selling flip-phones, and I'm proud to own one, my 4th. No GPS.

I believe some 40 or so states here are looking into anti-trust issues with Facebook, Google, Apple, etc. Funny thing was I just got an email about that Yahoo data breech a few years ago about about a class action lawsuit. I smell a class action lawsuit for Facebook.

Glad I ditched them some three years ago.

I never fell for FB.

I was unknowingly part of a class action suit against HP, which I was notified about after it was all over. I was allowed to pick out anything for $5 from their site... There wasn't anything.
