Google Chrome support ends for Windows 7 and 8.1 in early 2023

    Posted: 25 Oct 2022
    Hey all,

With the release of Chrome 110 (tentatively scheduled for February 7th, 2023), we’ll officially end support for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. You’ll need to ensure your device is running Windows 10 or later to continue receiving future Chrome releases. This matches Microsoft's end of support for Windows 7 ESU and Windows 8.1 extended support on January 10th, 2023.

Older versions of Chrome will continue to work, but there will be no further updates released for users on these operating systems. If you are currently on Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, we encourage you to move to a supported Windows version before that date to ensure you continue to receive the latest security updates and Chrome features.

As always, please feel free to send us feedback using these instructions.

    James, Chrome Support Manager

That only means you won't get any new releases. You can continue to use your current version as long as you want.

After all, technical support for Windows 7 ended on January 14, 2020. I haven't heard of anyone stop using Windows 7 because of that.

This has been long on coming. I have an old computer with a CPU without SSE2 support. I knew there was a problem when more and more Windows 7 updates were failing starting a few years ago. I found out that Microsoft was pushing out Windows updates and assumed your CPU supported SSE2. If not the updates simply failed.

Last year I read that new Chrome releases would require SSE2 support. That meant that my old computer would stop getting new releases of Chrome. Now Google is taking the next step and not supporting any computer running Windows 7 or 8.1. We should have known that this was coming. After all Windows 7 was released in 2009 and Windows 8.1 was released in 2013. Ten years of support is all we should expect these days.

So Chrome or the Chromium engine? Because if it's Chromium then say goodbye to a TON of programs you use on an everyday basis in Windows 7.

Also, just what code does Windows 10 offer that Windows 7 doesn't that Chrome needs? I use Ungoogled Chromium as one of my many browsers. I won't touch Google's contrived bullcrap with a 20' LAN cable!

Such a backward, asinine browser they had to advertise it to the chimps. Google runs TV ads to promote Chrome browser

The music makes my freaking ears bleed!

I'm primarily a Mozilla user so am not particularly bothered (at least until Mozilla announces they are ending support for Windows 7) but am curious since all my Windows 7 apps work perfectly in Windows 10. It's possible that future Chrome versions will still work in Windows 7, just no tech support will be provided for any issues. Maybe some of the Chromium forks will still continue to work, haven't seen any official announcement from Brave, Vivaldi, Slimjet etc..

Since Microsoft Edge is based on Google Chrome we should also note that support for Edge on Windows 7 is also ending about the same time as Chrome.

We will continue to support Microsoft Edge on Windows 7 and on Windows Server 2008 R2 until January 15, 2023.

I don't think that's it at all. There's more to a program than the Chromium engine. If the Chromium engine its self (not the Chrome browser) lacks support for Windows 7, then say goodbye to anything that uses it in Windows 7. The Windows Spotify program uses CEF so it may go south.

They have this all figured out. Not only does Google own the Internet (in a lot of ways), but Windows can force you to upgrade because of Google.

Time to support FOSS... and paid for alternatives.

Windows Play Store? What a joke. That's the next ball grab. Emphasis on "ball."

Here's an alternative. Chocolatey Software | Chocolatey - The package manager for Windows

I've been messing with someone's project called Tiny10. Check that out. It's striped, but still has some telemetry. For example. Every time I go to "This PC" it sends data on down the Internet.

I still need to vet all the code though.

I worked on someone's computer with 10. I couldn't believe how Facebook, Dropbox and other crap came packed in "your" OS for a PC (Personal Computer). I removed that crap and made note of that on the receipt. LOL Though, he said it was alright since he didn't use that crap.

google chrome community blog updated with the following:

Chrome 109 is the last version of Chrome that will support Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1. Chrome 110 (tentatively scheduled for release on February 7th, 2023) is the first version of Chrome that requires Windows 10 or later.
Note: This post was updated on October 26th, 2022 to clarify timelines and include Windows 8, and again on October 27th to further clarify milestone release numbers.
it looks like the upcoming 109 release is the last version that will support Windows 7 & 8.x
