"Not all the evolution represented by the move from Windows Vista to Windows 7 is visible on the surface of the operating system. In fact, one aspect of the next iteration of the Windows client which, although repeatedly confirmed, remains completely under-the-hood is MinWin. Back in 2007, Microsoft Distinguished Engineer Eric Traut was the first to give out a taste of the new core of Windows 7. Following Traut's presentation,
Microsoft Technical Fellow Mark Russinovich discussed MinWin on several occasions, the latest of which is synonymous with the availability of With Windows 7 pre-Beta Build 6801, in the video embedded at the bottom of this article (just skip ahead to 28:40).

“MinWin is just the bottom most part of Windows,” Russinovich explained. “It's about 40 MB, or 30 MB, or 25 MB on disk. You can see that it's not a whole lot, but it's for us to make that first step and make that engineering unit isolated and understand the process by which we go about doing that. This is visible in Windows 7 because of new DLLs. There's KernelBase so Kernel32 is one of these DLLs that needed to be re-factored we call it, so some parts of the Kernel32 API did not belong in the kernel and some parts did.”

MinWin is the smallest standalone, bootable, usable segment of Windows 7. In order to get to MinWin, Microsoft simply cut components from the Windows operating system to obtain a core which is completely isolated and self sufficient, in the sense that there are no dependencies outside of MinWin. In order for this to happen, the company had to relocate some application programming interfaces (APIs), and include them into MinWin in order to obtain absolute isolation. The end purpose is getting a Windows core which can be innovated on its own, and to componentize the rest of the operating system so that it can evolve separately from the core, too.

“Now where MinWin is there's no threads out, because we've moved the APIs around so that the layer where MinWin is defined is clean with respect to the rest of Windows outside. We have that thing isolated in the built tree, and we can build it separately from Windows, we can boot it, we can test it. [MinWin] is the Windows NT kernel plus the executive subsystem, the memory manager, networking, file system drivers,” Russinovich stated adding that any innovation within MinWin would not affect the Windows operating system."

There was another video clip seen there as well.

So far the only supposed mind you hold up was some problem with the product activation process for 7.

That has something to do with the new requirements seen when using an upgrade disk where you can no longer simply boot from that and perform a clean install without entering the product and going for updates and then upgrading over it like you could with the Vista upgrade disks.

The new requirement will be stricter as part of the MS antipiracy policy they are putting inplace for 7.

You too I see! The upgrade for Ultimate wasn't seen in the discount offers for preorders to begin with. MS is heavy on pushing the Home Premium and Professional editions. I did come across some more specific details on what will be required in order to use the upgrades. A major Windows 7 upgrade question gets an answer | TechBlog | Chron.com - Houston Chronicle

I'd rather see Windows 7 released to the public later on as they originally planned. I'm not affected because I have MSDN/Technet Subscription.

Well that's why they have updates, security fixes, and large service packs in order to get a new version out on a regular user basis where people from plain old average use will help discover any new bugs testing didn't come up prior to the general release. If new some new model desktop or laptop comes out after that and runs into problems that adds to the MS database as well as vendors to see solutions and patches for things.

If you didn't act fast you lose out! Unfortunately that was a limited time offer used for promoting 7. Individual retail chains also seem to have their own discounts while the pricing differences are not that large.

What you will find now on most online vendors is the buy Vista now get 7 free offers while the preorders are actually backed up for 7 at the normal prices! Newegg.com - Software,Operating Systems,Pre-order / Backorder

You'll find that to be the case at the MS online store as well. Microsoft Store U.S. - Home

I would rather they release Windows 7 early. Meanwhile, they can work on updates or service packs and roll them out every once in a while. IMHO, Windows 7 at this point is already excellently brilliant an OS, and as long as they provide bug fixes soon, I will be ready to start using Windows 7 as soon as possible.
