It depends on which side of the track you came from as far as XP. For the gamer coming up through the 9x family and following the ME flop XP was a desktop dream so it seems. On the other hand those who spent more time with office applications and networking 2000 Pro saw an upgrade to Vista bypassing XP entirely in many cases.

What is being seen now with 7 is a bridge across all of the old gaps plus looking at supporting some new hardware standards coming soon like USB 3.0 in 2010. Support for Fat and the new exFat lacking in Vista is also now a plus for 7 there with the increased usage of usb external HDs and flash drives. And lastly the new support for burning iso images natively is now seen with 7.

I agree with Night Hawk since coming up over the years with all the different versions of Windows. But people will keep using XP until they get a new computer or upgrade their existing hardware

Often that will be the case unfortunately if the hardware lacks support for the new XP Mode or worry about loss of older programs is there. Or simply the expense of buying new is out of range for the present moment.

One of the main reasons XP saw the largest amount of users to start with was the constant delays with 7's predacessor Vista offsetting the MS time table of a new version every 2-3yrs as it had been. Without anything new while other OSs were becoming more familiar as well. hep hhmmmm... XP became the standard for Windows. Too often without having any previous versions all many know is XP due to that.

So will 7 actually kill off XP or simply be the stepping stone for the correct direction MS has to take in order to see that happen? 7 is certainly the first step in the right direction!

nah Xp is god, most people thing a computer just means the machine with Xp on it and a Mac as an alternative, if it aint broke why fix it. And they wonder why people dont run out and buy seven its because people dont fully understand what operating systems are and why you need to update them.
The thing is, XP WAS broke, and that's why Microsoft delayed development on Longhorn and essentially gave us a whole new operating system in the form of XP SP2.

That's interesting you brought that up since 7 will see a reversal of things with the service packs as well according to at least one article. MS will be working on SP1 for 7 at the same time as it starts development on the next version due in 2012! With 2000 that ended up seeing some 5 SPs there.
