I battled this issue for months there are a couple of threads on here that beat this issue to death with all sorts of tips and advice. For me, the problem disappeared when I switched from an Nvidia Video card (9800 GX2) to the ATI 5870. I had suspected for the longest time it was my video card but there was no driver or tweak that could solve it.
You might to want pass that info along to others on those threads about what you saw there when changing vpu manufacturers. Here the only problem seen with 7 from the start has been the display automatically turning off after 20 minutes of inactivity with all plans not just one custom plan set to "never"!
When starting up or booting between the 32bit and 64bit installations each time you have to go in and still find it set to 20min.! Once set the display stays on until the next startup or reboot once again.
Other then that one item 7 hasn't seen the 137gb barrier prior to SP1 there. It hasn't seen the performance lag once the SPs were out while I ran Vista right from the start there until the 7 RCs were available and later saw Vista installed on a vhd once the XP/Vista dual boot was done for! And at this time only the retail 7 is left besides... XP Mode, VBox, and a few other things!
I really hope that happens to XP which has been around for a long time, as for Vista, personally, I didn't really have many complaints about it, but over time, I just prayed that MS would come out with something that I could really enjoy, and not be too concerned about software/driver compatibilities, or if it was stable enough to handle multiple tasks.
Windows 7 has in my mind nearly perfected what an operating system should be to the average computer user.
You have no idea how many people i knew who called me to rid their computers of XP, more so for Vista, honestly Vista really has left a bad taste in some people's mouths.
When I finished installing Windows 7 regardless if it was home premium, pro, or ultimate, they loved it, and so do I

Well let's face it, 7 really "hits the spot!" or rather the favorite spot when it comes to getting things on and running even older XP apps that saw problems with Vista seem to at least go on the 32bit 7! One more Plus for 7 to consider.The new troubleshoot compatibility tool can help there.
The overall reduction seen in start up and shutdown times is a plus as well as the responsiveness when really loaded down good with a lot of programs over past versions "period" not singling out one or another! And once again the "User Friendly" version has finally arrived!

I've been hanging on to XP and have not let my clients move to Vista.
Window 7 is the "Cat's A$$" and I'm now moving all of them to it...
Completely agree with this article. Windows XP's time has come and gone. Windows 7 is the present and the future. :)
When I realized it was the surge of dual booters wanting out of XP and Vista within hours of Win7 release. We had a dozen here some nights, and still often have 2-3 in process at a time in Install forum.
With beta testers, it took us maybe weeks or months to get there. But these users who had carefully followed dual booting tutorials wanted out almost as soon as they tried Win7 the first time.
How much trouble would it have been to have XP or Vista around for awhile, to be sure? Nope, to these who had just seen the future, it was just too compelling not to shed completely the past.
This is perhaps the greatest invention since the computer, because it completes it nearly flawlessly and with such a graceful style.
When the beta builds were first installed on two separate drives each one shared the drive with either XP or Vista at the time. Later with a 3rd OS drive added in XP went first shortly followed by Vista.
Eventually the Vista install on a vhd was replaced there too by the 32bit RC! With 7 there was only one solution. R.I.P. XP, R.I.P. Vista! Onward with "7"!!!
