    Google considering leaving China

    Posted: 12 Jan 2010
    Hi all
due to some of its email accounts being "tampered with" (these accounts are usually Human Rights activists in China and elsewhere) Google is seriously thinking of pulling up stakes in China.

Be interesting to see if they've actually got the Bottle to do it -- usually in issues of Money vs Principles -- Money wins out so don't hold your breath here.

Reuters has a different view: Instant View: Google may pull out of China over censorship | Reuters

U.S. Secretary of State Hilary Clinton will announce a technology policy next week to help citizens in other countries gain access to an uncensored Internet, Clinton's senior advisor for innovation Alec Ross told Reuters separately.

Along the same line but for different reasons I heard on the German news today that AOL is pulling out of several countries in Europe. They close their offices there, but people can still use their AOL id. At least that's what the news reported.

Look China has a massive population and something like this doesn't surprise me at all. Out of the billions of people they have you would expect someone at some stage to get around and look into something like this. Yes i agree it isn't nice and look whats happened , but Google pulling out of china will cost them money and a lot of fans.

This may be one case where the commercial considerations that normally rule Google, or any large multinational company, may not win out.

When starting google.cn Google went against some of it's main principles where in order to work in China it agreed to government censorship.

At the time the move into China was opposed due to this censorship by many of the higher management, this may be enough to make those opposed to the situation a majority
