Unfortunately, that is undoubtedly true. Whatever technologies are developed to protect intellectual properties and rights, there are always unscrupulous people, either working alone or as small groups, who will strive to circumvent such technologies (and, in most cases, they will succeed). The only thing that companies such as Microsoft (and others) can do is to continually develop and evolve the technology.

Disagree. Encryption technology has always outpaced piracy schemes and is the basis for most security on the web and in the enterprise (photon torpedoes are a close second Adoption failure has been the root cause of many security issues -- look at WEP that can be broken in SECONDS using freely downloadable, bootable toolkits like Backtrack. If Microsoft were serious about curbing piracy they could simply shell out a stipend to OEM and motherboard manufacturers on each unit. If the manufacturers chose to produce hardware that was able to run new Windows builds they would take the money and run. Remember that there is no problem running Linux on EFI machines -- the GRUB guys have been doing longer than Microsoft! I think Microsoft should put this scheme in front of the board of directors and the government regulators citing that Apple's been using EFI for some time now and than nobody would make a PC mobo that can't run Windows. The cash they give to manufacturers would be reaped multiply on gains from new OS sales.

Or maybe, just maybe, they're worried that such a scheme would drive Apple and Linux sales? Hmm? Is Microsoft failing to curb piracy to ensure "unearned market share?" It's an interesting question knowing that if some ding dong from sevenforums can sew up their piracy issues in a single post than they've surely thought of it long before I have.

Just to add my 0.02$

The update is maybe momentarily voluntary, but that wont be the case in SP1.

I think there is a fair amount of truth to this idea. I think Microsoft knows they can survive from new machine sales and business purchases and licensing. They don't want to make it drop dead simple to pirate...but they don't want to ensure that it cannot be used by pirates...if this were the case...some would certainly turn to alternatives.

... AutoPatcher.com

Only need WGA for media player and windows defender... programs I don't use anyways...
