Windows 7 Build 6936 Hints at Windows 7 Beta
    November 20th, 2008

The German online magazine Winfuture (German) got their hands on the latest Windows 7 build with the build number 6936 that got distributed to the small circle of pre-beta testers. The build is identical with the build that was used to demonstrate Windows 7 at the WinHec conference. That build was created at the end of October according to Winfuture.

The full taskbar functionality is now available in that build. The remarkable changes of build 6936 are:

    • Jumplists are accessible by right-clicking on a symbol in the task bar
    • The Start button seems more colorful when moving the mouse over it
    • The Start menu is now displaying icons next to the most used applications which lead to Jump Lists as well
    • They mention new and updated symbols but fail to provide details
    • The Zoom function is now available which can be used to zoom into parts of the computer desktop. The zoom works in multimedia files as well.
    • Hardware Detection seems to have been improved as devices that were not completely detected in the PDC build were not detected correctly.
    • Missing drivers were downloaded from Windows Update automatically
    • The Shutdown button is now showing in text form what it will do

    I do keep checking.

I think MS really do need to sort another leak out as the Windows 7 hype is beginning to die down, and IMHO they really need to keep it rolling with "leaks" or public releases to keep the public (geeks) and journalists talking.

Just out of curiosity, does Windows 7 lend itself to being upgraded so that one can preserve ones settings, i.e. new builds installed over old, or not?

I guess there won't be any problem on Updating the existing version of w7, unless you wish to change the language. I used to try betas of Windows Server XP and finally ended up, after numerous of updates, with Windows Server 2003:)

Thanks. I'd read somewhere that it was OK to doi that so that settings could be preserved. I guess, when the time comes, I will try an upgrade install and see what happens.

    Hi Peter,

I'm pretty sure that you have to do a complete clean reinstall for these beta versions.
