Windows Phone 7 Series

    Windows Phone 7 Series

Microsoft just unveiled its latest mobile operating system, Windows Phone 7 Series at Mobile World Conference in Barcelona. It is a complete departure from Windows Mobile, the latest version of which is 6.5.3.

The new operating system is subject to strict hardware specifications; including screen size and type, processor speed and type, and button function and placement. Microsoft is aiming for a unified experience between devices, unlike the previous Windows Mobile which was the subject of vendor skinning.

Windows Phone 7 Series devices will feature integration with social networking sites, location aware search, and Office Sharepoint and Xbox live integration.

The Start menu has been replaced with a 'tile screen' that contains tiles that work as widgets and shortcuts, and update dynamically (the outlook tile will update with the number of unread messages).

Full coverage of the Microsoft event is available at the Engadget live blog.

It is worth checking out, it looks fantastic in my opinion.

I'm a WinMo fan, admittedly. I used to love tinkering with my XDA II since tinkering can really help you bring the best out of your device (e.g. run WinMo 6.5 on it). What I hope with WinMo7 is that it would still be able to keep its "complexity under the hood"- the way how you can easily tinker with it like your desktop. I'm pretty sure everyone like to mod almost everything they feel comfortable with.

If WinMo7 would be like Nokia, Apple, or every other phone out there with limited APIs you can use and "tinkerabilty" (xda-developers-style), I would be official a WinMo hater now. Android's not my thing also.

    *edit:
found out it's based on WinCE 7 so that's a relief. WHEW!

    *rant start*
AND I HOPE WE COULD ALSO EDIT THE REGISTRY FREELY
    *rant end*

Agreed. I love tinkering with my Ozone...running an XDA ROM as we speak.

New pictures of the marketplace are available. Also, video of the operating system in use from MSDN.

    This is awesome.
