As soon as I saw the reluctance on the part of the ZD Net writer who referred to the OP's original article to even cover it I knew this was nothing but "utter nonsense"! If 7 maxed memory out to 86% everyone here would have already been screaming and jumping up and down when the beta builds were first run about it!
InfoWorld did the right thing there in getting rid of a ... you fill in the blanks! Even Vista never maxed out 86% while being looked down on often enough. Obviously someone was more interested in generating a controversy rather then stating the actual facts.
Well I have 3 computers running win7. One is my gaming pc, one is movie watching, the other is only internets.
- gaming pc: Built from Newegg.com
athlon64 x2 6000
3gb ddr2 (4th ram stick died)
gefoce260gtx
win7 64bit rc1
- movie watching pc: Built from Newegg.com
athlon64x2 3800
4gb ddr2
geforce 7000gs (dont remember exactly what card off top of my head)
win7 64bit rc1
- internets pc: Compaq Presario 5005sr + upgrades
P3 933 coppermine
512megs sdram
gefoceFX 5200 pci 256meg
win7 32bit rc1
Only my internet pc actually runs out of ram. But it only has avg/spybot/firefox running so its no problem. The p3 computer came with WinME,128megs of sdram, so running win7 on its like trying to run a F1race with a Model T. It chugs along and don't crash. It has yet to lock up on me. More than i can say for winME. It locked up every 30min with that. Tryed running WoW on it but got like 4fps. (even with min settings WoW wants to use about 250-500 megs of ram. So it uses the hdd.)
Well the gaming one did run out of ram a few days ago. I was playing WoW, in a endgame raid with 24 other people. Max settings. Firefox with like 10 tabs open. Avg thought it would be funny to pic that moment to run a scan. Win7 popped up telling me to close ether ventrilo or firefox.
So this "Win7 using all your ram" is nonsense. Unless your trying to use it on a computer built to run ME.

Keeping that old FX5200 system running. Last year when the 7 beta builds were first available a few reported running those on oldies seeing only 512mb of memory!
DDR PC2700 and PC3200 memory is still available if that will take 1gb or more to give that case a boost. But the RCs at this time will be hitting the 3/1/2010 shutdown every 2 hours of activiry problem. Upgrade to retail along with the memory upgrade!
the reason is superfetch, also if 64bit is used then the filesystem cache is allowed to grow to a larger size then it did in XP, not sure about compared to vista.
Unused ram is usually wasted ram, however the problem could be that superfetch is too agressive and the caching algorithms dont free ram when an app requests it. I have 6 gig of ram and did at the start of this week have some swapping occuring.
Also I noticed windows seven allocates normal ram to graphics usage even with a dedicated graphics card, my 8800GT has 512meg onboard memory and over 2 gig of ram allocated to shared video memory.
This seems to relate to a question that I recently posted, but didn't get the answer to...when I started to swap a 8800GTS, to replace the one that I'm using, I found that the replacement was defective. The part that confused me, is that when I tried to boot with it, the BIOS produced a beep code that meant that there was a memory corruption in the uppper 64MB of memory. I don't believe that my BIOS settings have any option to turn video memory either on or off, so I was wondering how a defective card could have this effect? However, if this video memory is something like a pagefile, that would sound like something residing in this hard drive's pagefile, instead of on the physical RAM. If that is so, I'm still confused how a bad video card could produce that kind of beep code?
