Why should it be the ISP's responsibility? That is just added expense (which would be passed to the consumer). It is the user's responsibility.

    that idea wouldn't work,

I for one do not want my ISP looking at what im downloading, not because im downloading anything dodgy but because i believe that its my data what i do with it is my business, my ISP is merely the conduit through which that data flows, in the same way that the electric company dont ask what im doing with my power, (im excluding really bad things like kiddy porn from this obviously)

for that reason i use a VPN so how exactly would your ISP idea work on that? they have no idea what im doing, its encrypted... therefore ultimate responsibility would still be mine, which is exactly how it should be,

can you imagine the lag if your ISP was checking every single packet for viruses? why should they make more work for themselves? its just a waste of money which would ultimately be passed on to us, the consumers

On the surface, it does sound like a good idea - except sometimes one needs internet access to download tools to clean up an infection.

yeah so...basically if you get malware, you need a new computer? Or you have to purchase a CD with the necessary tools to fix it? bogus.

Or you have to take the pc to a specialist or send it in to teh Manufacturer.

Or get the programs from the net using a second computer.

Many here have balked at this unique approach, many have claimed this is an attempt by MS to police the computing world, many say AV suites should be improved...

I disagree with all of you! MS isnt the problem, the OS isnt the problem, AV suites are not the problem.

The problem is LOOSE NUTS BEHIND THE KEYBOARD!

I have been building and fixing PCs for 15+ years and I can say that from my personal experience there are many many "dumb" users out there... who 3 years after buying a new PC think they are still protected by their manufacturer supplied AV suite. Many are totally surprised when I show them that AV was a 60 day trial! Security is an afterthought with most home users... unless they have had to pay a Geek Squad Moron $50+ per hour to "remove" an infection. Some people learn from their mistakes, some dont.

Furthermore, many household PCs are controlled by the teenagers in that household... many times mom & dad have no idea that junoir has removed or disabled AV to get faster performance in a game. Many teens also dont read/understand error messages and just click continue. Not to mention BearShare, Limewire, Bittorrents, etc. I think education of users is a key component here!

Since MS OSes account for some 80+% of the worlds computing OSes, I applaud MS for taking such a stand. Now with that said, I am also very leary of how they plan to implement this... It's only an idea at this stage.

We use their OS so we should sit back, relax, and wait to see what happens on this front.
You read my mind. I would rep you right now if I could.
    Thanks!!!!!!!

    Why cant you rep??? LOL!

I agree, I wasn't defending MS's point, I was just trying to brainstorm solutions to the problem. As an experienced user, I would download all the tools as soon as possible and use the disc if I get a virus, so I dont have to download while infected. Or use my backup comp to download them. The average home user will not know what programs they should get ahead of time or have a second computer. Most would probably just call Microsoft.
