I still don't understand WHY people want to go back to The OLD OS while they can have a nice fast wds that they already paid for it.....
Maybe ...they are used to the OLD Xp ...i get it ...
But is it time to move on and learn some new better stuffs...?
"Stop wasting your money ...people ..."

XP is definitely more efficient, fast & stable running some applications. If you're using the applications in question to make a living... then you stay with what works.

Newer is not always better, witness... (short pause) VISTA!

But from a home user point of view this makes no sense why would you buy a Windows 7 machine with a downgrade rights. When a home user buys a Windows 7 machine (typically 1 machine at a time) they are READY for Windows 7 and don’t need the downgrade rights.
I agree, having a home user downgrade to XP (To me, a waste of money) You have a wonderful up to date hardware, and you use an operating system that uses old hardware and probably won't work right away.

But with the business side, I really think they should be putting on some pressure and there application developers because XP is not going to last forever!
We can put pressure on them but are you going to pay the 10 million for the upgrade for the 100 propriety software we have and old hardware that needs an upgrade?? Last I checked Hardware and software is not free.

Home users don't understand the major changes we have to go through to put a new OS out. This is nothing like your home PC. We have to make everything work together and keep employees productive. I have to make sure the computer connects to a network and be secure, connect to unsecure networks as securely as possible, connect to trusted networks (tokens and keys), I have to make sure the machine can print to printers, copiers, fax machines, main frame printers, mid-range printers, make sure the machine can scan from network scanners, local scanners, make sure they have access to share drives, shared documents, collaboration, make sure they have access to corporate email, calendaring, voicemail, connection to DC, GC, KMS, LDAP, AD, make sure they can use their logon script (Windows XP very different than Windows 7), make sure they have VPN access, mobile computing, PDA, and SmartPhone support. This is just a scratch on the surface and not to mention Windows 7 64Bit. The corporate world needs XP downgrade rights until everything can be put in place and especially giving corporate the time to come up with the money.
Money is an issue I will agree with that, and so is time to implement all of the many things that business need to make employees work more productive and work with up to date software and hardware.

WindowsStar, do you think by 2014 your businesses or any other business will be off of XP?

    By 2014, I hope so...

We really have no choice. Q4 of this year we will be in full deployment of Windows 7. We hope to have all systems converted buy end of year 2014. We are hoping for a 7 to 9 year life for Windows 7 as we got with Windows XP.

BTW, we still have DOS, Windows for Workgroups, and Windows NT machines in our system. Mind you very few but some just could not be converted to XP. With the 7 rollout we are working hard to remove all legacy OS’s and have a true Windows 7 only environment

It would probably be a smart idea for companies to standardize on one OS, and now is as good a time for that as any.

Now that I figured out how to make the install smaller to fit on my hand-me-down computers, I will never go back to XP, unless somehow my "fixed" copies of 7 get destroyed. So my personal opinion is that this is an excellent move for Microsoft (finally).
What do you do to achieve that?

In my point of view, a home user could be getting a new system because their old one is to old or completely out of memory.. but they don't really want the new windows, since the stuff they have (printers, scanners, faxes, etc) are all set for XP and probably at the time were made to be used with 2000-XP and wont work with vista or 7 so they downgrade their new machines so they cans till use the stuff and not have to worry bout going out and buying new scanners printers copiers whatever.

This is based off a printer/fax/copier/scanner my homie has for his XP machine, it wouldn't install on my Win7 machine at all. Me personally, i absolutely LOVE win7. its not complex and its easier to use then XP to me, so if i had to downgrade to xp again, id laugh and say No, fudge your face. Id rather go without my laptop then use XP again. plus everyone i know that has XP, all want 7 because they don't like the XP, they want better.

I'd think on a 512 MB single core PC XP is faster than W7.

On a 4-8 GB quadcore W7 will be faster since it takes advantage of modern technologies. I assume on a 2 GB dualcore W7 also will be faster, but migth be closer.

W7 also doesn't get much slower over time as XP does.
