    Internet approaches addressing limit

    Posted: 11 May 2010

In less than 18 months there will be no more big blocks of net addresses to give out, estimates suggest.
Predictions name 9 September 2011 as the date on which the last of those tranches is released for net firms and others to use.
Everything connected to the net needs an "IP address" to ensure data reaches the right person or device.
Experts say that the net's entire existing address space will be exhausted about a year after that date.

    IPv6 here we come!

Here is a quick question, is IPv6 compatible with IPv4? (I'm thinking not)

No, but since Vista (I believe), Windows supports both at the same time (no need to turn on off to use the other).

But XP has limited support for IPv6.

    Another reason to upgrade.

I was speaking of Windows using it out of the box.

An IP address lets you find and connect to computers/devices on a network.
    In simplest terms.
