    Hi all
Where do they get these statistics from -- How can they POSSIBLY know what the % usage is.

They never asked ME so that's at least one person they don't have stats for -- and I can think of 100's if not 1000's of others.

And then what about all the "Pirate" copies of the various released of Windows.

Before Windows XP you could provided you had the serial number install Windows on as many computers as you liked (not legally of course) so how can MS possibly know the number of say Windows 2000 users at the moment.

Honestly these stats mean absolutely NOTHING at all.

What they CAN know at any one time is the number of Windows licenses that are currently ACTIVE on their licensing servers -- but even this doesn't tell correctly the number of users

For example I have 2 legally paid for VISTA Ultimate licenses but I haven't currently got them installed on any machine at the moment.

I'd really FIRE any sales director basing management plans on these sorts of stats.

    Cheers

I can only say one thing about where they get their stats, Windows Update.

    Hi there
    That's also incredibly unreliable.

    1) A lot of users both of Legal and Pirate versions STILL never update their software -- it's a shame but true. Most "general public" users are totally different to people who use Forums like this.

    2) Corporate installations tend to get something like 1 update from MS and then deploy it to maybe several THOUSAND of their desktop PC's (via corporate licensing so it's OK). So the "Update" count would be wildly inaccurate.

The only realistic way they could gather these stats is based on the number of LICENSES sold (including Pre-installed versions on OEM machines).

However this itself will still lead to inaccurate results -- even judging by this board most people who buy a machine immediately get rid of all the crap, ad, and bloatware installed on these and chose to install there OWN OS whether a previous version such as XP or a new retail version.

What also of those organisations who buy several hundred PC's and then immediately deploy their OWN OS image (licensed of course).

So the number of SALES will not be anything like the number of USERS of a particular OS - however it's probably the best they can do.
