Test Updates Coming for the Windows 7 RC

Quote:
Starting this Tuesday (May 12th) we will release up to ten test updates to PCs running the Windows 7 RC in order to verify our ability to deliver and manage updating of Windows 7 in certain real-life scenarios. These updates do not deliver any new features or fixes. This is the second set of test updates we’ve released to test the updating mechanism for Windows 7 - the first set were released on February 24. For more information, see this post on the Microsoft Update Blog.

No problem here! I usually prefer to leave the automatic updates off anyways for manually picking and choosing what will go on to start with! That keeps too new device drivers for a few addon devices working now from running into problems with any driver changes.

The reason why Microsoft want to repeat this exercise is to check that everything is working as it should. There have been a number of under-the-hood changes in W7 between the Beta 7000 and the RC 7100, and MS want to check and make sure that none of these changes have had an adverse effect on the updating mechanism and related routines.

That stands to reason. If there are any problems seen prior to 7's final release this is time for seeing those corrected. The 7000 betas were just that "beta stages" not fully compiled builds at that point.

This test was also performed on Vista SP1 systems to insure there was no problem with SP2. It also was performed on Vista to insure SP1 went OK.
It really does not seem strange to me, but so be it.

When XP's SP2 first came many saw problems there which was later corrected. Initially some with HPs, Dells, and other premade systems ran into problems now corrected when updating or downloading SP1 for Vista there. Then some saw problems with the SP2 when first seen in beta still on here by the way since that came out.

With MS as a rule and other software companies to consider there too it always takes a good period of time to see all the bugs worked out. With XP that was a travesty simply since it took this long to finally see SP3 and the 1,000 bug fixes for the old version there. Only 7yrs. for that.
