Microsoft pulls the plug on Kin

From Microsoft pulls the plug on Kin by Ina Fried:

Amid slow sales, Microsoft has decided to halt work on its Kin phone, focusing instead on its Windows Phone 7 effort, CNET has learned.

The phone will not ship in Europe, as planned, and the company is shifting the team's workers to focus on Windows Phone 7, the Microsoft smartphone operating system due out later this year. Andy Lees, who heads up the company's cell phone efforts announced the move to Microsoft workers earlier on Wednesday, according to a source close to the company.

Microsoft confirmed the move in a statement to CNET.

"We have made the decision to focus exclusively on Windows Phone 7 and we will not ship KIN in Europe this fall as planned," the company said. "Additionally, we are integrating our KIN team with the Windows Phone 7 team, incorporating valuable ideas and technologies from KIN into future Windows Phone releases. We will continue to work with Verizon in the U.S. to sell current KIN phones."

Probably a good idea. WP7 is going to be a huge seller, and most of the Kin's target market (teens) already have either an iPhone or an Android based phone.

Also, this means I won't have to see that annoying commercial about the guy and his ex-girlfriend anymore, so I'm all for pulling the plug on it.

The Kin phones are actually the first incarnation of the Windows 7 Phone to begin with.

Good move. Stop focusing on the lesser product and put more effort on what should be the top of their line.

I am hoping WP7 does take off huge.
