Phasing out an old operating system is nothing new for Microsoft, but Windows XP is unique in that it may be too good to die. This week, Dell announced it will offer systems with the aging Windows XP for a surcharge of $150 over the newer Windows Vista—this only five months after it stopped offering XP on its Inspiron consumer desktop and laptop PCs.
The deadline for Windows XP downgrades has been pushed back twice now, remaining in effect until July 31, 2009—a strong indication that enough users want to stay with the aging XP rather than give Vista a chance.
Some of you might be thinking why im a talking about Xp in a W7 forum
because of my favorite line of the whole article....
"Sinofsky [Windows senior VP Steven Sinofsky] is pretty clear about how his process works. Windows 7 code won't ship until it's ready."
might it be a success???
only time can tell...
apart from these builds (which are incredible) i believe if MS continues along this path they will have a solid OS...
I think W7 will be a success unless MS throws a wrench in the works. I agree that they should be pushing Vista instead of penalizing XP. If I was buying a comp and didn't want Vista I'd be teed off to have to pay another 150 for an older OS. Seems all that will do is make things worse for MS, not better. Their actions make it appear that they don't like Vista either. They should do a lot more to show that it is a good OS.
I hope that Windows 7 is released "when it's ready" and not, like was the case with Vista, rushed out the door with all kinds of "bits" missing.
So far it appears that they are on the right track. Personally I like Vista, but it is a bit of a resource hog, and they seem to be getting away from that in 7.
Could the $150 downgrade just be a case of Dell jumping on the general Anti Vista FUD bandwagon and using it to make a bit of money, and get rid of it's old stock of XP disks

or is that me being cynical
I'm not too impressed with Dell, so it wouldn't take much to convince me.
windows XP is a GREAT OS !!!, it will go down in history as one of the best.
but its time time to move on, i really hope all those vista hating XP dinosaurs don't see W7 as a vista refresh b/c the ignorance will start all over again...
thousands put off by the fact that W7 ''is like vista'' when these ppl haven't even tried vista, they just jump on the hatred bandwagon..
now M$ have a battle to move W7 away from anything ''vista'' to grab back that huge chunk of the market which currently sit on the fence...

i hope you are reffering to WinXp SP2 right???
i remember when everyone started bashing WinXP in the beginig (cuz it was the cool thing to do yet everyone had some form of windows xp at home or work) and now look at the people that dont want to let go...
but i love MS's Adverts on their website...
theres this one who knows nothing of an OS (or what it is) works....
and she is saying how smart vista is....
sorry but i was LMAOing all the time (sorry couldnt help...)
if MS could made usuable for girl like that then everything is possible...
as long as its stable of course and not memory demanding...
i already know vista is way more secure than xp so i wont go there...

It's not just me - the lady who brought the cake agreed
LMAO
+1
as to this cake you are referring to is physical or metaphysical...???
lol
as to the dell xp issue i guess i was one of the lucky ones to get it for free..
(as i was donated a Dell Machine that was burned out (litteraly...lol) and on the inside had a Xp disc...
(regular dell oem disc (no bloat no nothing SP2 too)...
i just think that dell sees a potential market to make money out of loyal xp fans (with the emphasis on loyal)
or they have invested so much in vista that they would rather see the warehouse stockpile with Vista Comps go (with Vista for no extra charge) than having to rip out vista and having to use their more time to bring out drivers for both XP and Vista....
