Well, now we are arguing what constitutes necessary.
To me, it seems reasonable that if I walk into Best Buy and purchase something while living in Michigan that I will pay a 6% sales tax on it.....that the same would hold true if I went to BestBuy.com or Amazon.com and bought the same thing.
I mean if it's legal and "necessary" to collect sales tax on goods in a retail store in your state....why is it unnecessary to do so when you purchase via the Internet?

My statement was a general one about taxation. Not on retail taxes, etc.
High sales taxes is one motivation people have to buy online. Tax them online and it takes away the incentive to buy. Less money in my pocket is less money to spend to keep the economy solvent.
Why does anyone think that free shipping is popular? Because you save the money you would pay in driving to the store and pay in taxes as well.
I don't believe it's right to tax every behavior and every action.

You pay for shipping on the internet. You don't pay for shipping when you go to a local Best Buy.
It's the government that wants taxation on internet purchases. But it is the online retailers that will lose out on sales if internet sales are taxed. That will cost people jobs and possibly entire businesses. The USPS already operates at a loss, most likely they will cut employees or raise shipping costs even more. The same for UPS or FedEx.
Who do you stand by? The government or the American worker? You want tens of thousands of people to lose their jobs over what the government thinks is right?

First of all this doesnt surpirse me at all that this guy is from massachusettes....
no offense to anyone who lives there but i feel sorry for you
This goes a lot deeper then whether our government thinks there should be a tax on the internet. The current administration wants to tax every aspect of our lives and lower the quality of our lives, they are also out for complete government control and want to be able to dictate and regulate everything you do.
Anyone who has been paying attention to whats going on in politics lately knows there are many taxes this administration is trying to pass right now.

I think there will still be incentive...as online retailers don't maintain storefronts usually and thus reduce costs...which in turn can be passed on to you as the consumer through lower sales prices on the goods. All things being equal, you would still pay less in sales tax then retail since it's a percentage based on selling price.
Free shipping is popular because as consumers over the past 20 years, when you order remotely and have it shipped to you...you always have had to pay for it. These online retailers are able to eat the cost of the shipping in order to increase the total amount of their business sales. All things being equal, if I had a choice between getting a product in a retail store immediately versus buying it online and having it shipped to me...if price was the same...I would get it local. In fact, I might even pay a little extra for that instant gratification.
Well of course...they have to send it from the warehouse to your house.
On the flip side, so many local retail stores in my area have gone out of business, putting local friends, family and neighbors out of work because their business dried up when everybody started buying things cheaper online. Again, online store fronts don't have the retail costs associated with running a store front...thus they pass the savings onto you in lower retail prices. As long as shipping doesn't cost too much....if people had to pay the sales tax regardless...I don't see where online stores would really suffer. But I can attest to many, many, many local businesses that are no longer operating around me in the metro Detroit area.
