I've stayed relatively virus and attack free for YEARS and I owe that to smart habits, proper security (hardware and software) and in part to using Firefox...

Using IE for anything other than some Cisco programming and monitoring just feels wrong now....

This was not about InPrivate browsing to which I assume you are referring. That is actually ANOTHER reason to use IE

This was about protected mode which isolates the browser from the entire rest of the system.

I've used IE since 4.0 and never been infected with anything.

Proper browsing habits and a security minded consciousness using /any/ browser currently available will keep you safe.

Unfortunately neither FF nor IE is as secure or safe as they can be at default settings, requiring some minor settings adjustments in IE and an add-on or two in FF to achieve that state, and that can get people in trouble.

Iv been hearing it over and over again now, IE8 with smartscreen filter and protected mode on is the safest bet on windows vista or seven. The speed differences to me seem so minor. Chrome does seem to lead in that catagory though.

I think FF and Chrome are becoming more popular due to the fact that the average user that really doesnt know the difference starts using it by hear say and just goes with it because its something new.

Kinda like my friend who voted for obama because he said everyone else was...

Or people saying vista sucks because they heard it from someone else but cant tell you why it sucks...

Despite any new features of IE8, IE has historically been a very unsecure browser, and that pattern has not changed dramatically. IE8 currently has 13 Secunia advisories and 49 vulnerabilities. Those numbers are not as significant as the fact that MS doesnt bother to patch them very speedily. As of now, 31% of those advisories are unpatched.

It isn't security that prevents me from using IE8 in Protected Mode. It's instability and functionality that do.

I dont think anyone would dispute that IE8 is a safe browser.

Its just soooo slow to render. On Default settings, with no Addons installed for either of them, FF just kicks IE's ass speed wise.

Here's another good reason for me not to use IE too.

Never fails, the FF fans always want to bash anything related to IE. I think you made your point guys.

I would like to point out that the security advisor did NOT recommend IE8 OVER FF, she said she saw no reason to switch.

Still, one security expert is running Internet Explorer 8, and notes that she sees no reason to jump to Firefox or to Chrome.
Interpret that how you will, just wanted to clarify.
