    Posted: 23 Jul 2010
    The Moscow Times said:
The government is hoping to launch the first version of a "national operating system" for its computers as early as next year, a senior Communications and Press Ministry official said Thursday.

The operating system, for use on the computer systems of government agencies and state-run companies, will be 90 percent based on the open-source Linux operating system, Deputy Communications and Press Minister Ilya Massukh said.

He said use of the operating system would be optional for all agencies.

I guess they were less than impressed with Microsoft's source code.

Yeah, only using 10% of Windows code as they told that it will be 90% based on Linux...

Note, they say optional in the main article. Running an OS is one thing, but the available apps are far more important.

He said use of the operating system would be optional for all agencies
Sorry, but OpenOffice != MS Office

Apparently they haven't looked at the "LINUX" source code

(I have, ugh, and actually am frequently having to deal with it and the maintainers complete randomness of cute coding quirks and oposition to any semblense of backwards binary compatibility even in "stable" kernel lines)

Keep the urge; its a multinational family (MNF )

I read that too, smitty, but I forgot where...may be some old forum?

May be they want to curtail down the cost?? Or May be a way to wipe out piracy? (Bangladesh Govt. encourages to use Linux for home users).

Perhaps it's not. However, for my home use, OpenOffice fits the bill just perfectly. Heck, even with a Microsoft Home Use Program where I can get Office 2010 Professional for just $9.95...I continue to use OpenOffice.

Why spent 1 cent on Microsoft Office, when i have a work laptop with Microsoft Office 2010 on it that I can use if I absolutely have to have office. Gives me money for lunch, movie rentals, etc.
