ATI Delivers the World's First 1 GHz Graphics Processor

    Posted: 13 May 2009
AMD announced today that nine years after it launched the world’s first 1 GHz CPU, it is releasing a factory overclocked graphics processor that is the first to break the 1 GHz barrier using standard air-cooling solutions. As a result, ATI, a wholly-owned subsidiary of AMD, has become the first graphics company to break the 1 GHz barrier. Xbox fans and avid TeamXbox.com readers know ATI is the company that provided the graphics technology that powers the Xbox 360.

Neat. But air is not enough anymore to cool those clocks. Even the HD4870x2's are too hot at 900Mhz. 1Ghz may be the ceiling on air, anything more and you get into the 60's and 70's (celcius) on idle.

    Well that is impressive!

I am just kind of surprised it took this long for them to do it. This thing must just fly.

They will have to make the chips smaller and use less power to make up for the increased clock speed to keep the cost down :)

Good. When can I expect GPUs that hit 1 GHz without any overclocking.

    THAT is the important question.

Most of the best 4890´s easily hits the 1ghz clock with a slight overclock, and without getting too hot. For that you just need a good case with air flow.

    Cheers.
