Alan, what a lovely gesture for a friend. In this day and age it's nice to see that at least some folk are generous and kind hearted.
Thanks for that, I ran into some issues with the build and the money keep adding up but I just knew that he'd be happy with it if I could just get it in the house. Once connected to his monitor, keyboard and mouse it worked flawlessly. As I left he said several times how this was the first good thing to happen in his life in many years and that just made everything so worth it. He's like a "brother from another mother" and we've shared some amazing times and this gift did me as much good as I hope it does him!

Alan, what you did is a prime example of the saying, "If you want to have a good friend, be one"

    Thanks Steve,
He and I go way back to the late sixties and when we get together it's a trip down memory lane, just the best to see him happy.

No I'm not made of money, but in all my time owning and building computers, I've never once had what I consider a high end system. This time I'm going for it. Just have to save my pennies over the next coming months - by Sept.
Hi Drew, while I can fully understand wanting a high end rig - Realistically an X79 system is a bit overkill, especially if you're sticking with a single GPU. Even I decided against a X79 build. But if you're keen... At least photo work apps will take advantage. Speaking of which, why not 32GB if you're doing editing? 2133-2400mhz 32GB.

For mobos I'm asus biased. Cost a bit more, but worth it.

The little I've read about haswell is that it's focusing a lot on the iGPU. Double the speed and less battery usage.

However it's only a few months away I believe. June apparently. I'd wait personally.

It will require new mobos, socket 1150 for mainstream. Not sure about 2011 replacement.

I know you aren't trusting of multi cards, but I hate to say the performance boost you're wishing for comes from adding another card. I know NVidia dual cards have matured and I've heard good things about Crossfire. I think you'd be pleasantly surprised.

A new cpu will net you only so much, even OCed to 4.6+

Well since the motherboard will be in a case, I'm not too concerned with looks. Performance is what I'm looking at, not looks. Besides I don't think the boards look bad anyway, which is why they're a candidate in my book.
Yep you're right mate it really was just my own personally preference for blue as a theme colour and well everyone has their own likes dislikes for how a rig looks. Plus performance I suppose is the ultimate decider.

Just one thing I got the impression that you had a ridgy didge rig that you wanted to keep for yourself and just make up one for everyone else that would keep them from using your main machine. So I did get a tad confused as to why we were talking such high end or reasonably high end gear. Sorry if I sounded a bit high and mighty minded

I dropped this rig off to a dear friend last weekend and he was stunned, it was so nice to recycle some parts, buy some new parts and put all in a great case. It looks great and runs like a top. Adding the SSD helped and 8gb of DDR2.
Fairplay to you chap Another very generous gift but as you say it's all worth it when you see the reaction it brings.
if only there were more people in the world that thought like this.

No offense taken. I get it, and we all have preferences. All is good :)

Anyway I always justify my PC upgrades by looking at the backup system. And since it's starting to act up, it gives my an excuse to upgrade mine, and move the old parts to the backup.

Keeps everyone happy - they get a newer faster system, and I get an upgrade

Been doing it like this for years, which has always allowed me to keep at least two good systems.
