    ganjiry,
Nothing like a new build, even if it's not top shelf it's still a blast to assemble and finally fire up ! Hope your brother will watch and learn about the assembly as well.

Slightly different motherboard model from mine, maybe the more modern version. Looks like it will be a fun build.

    The Pi has arrived.

I wasn't going to show this side until I had it perfect, but it's still a rolling WIP; at current it's rather sloppy by my standards.

I agree. I'm actually starting to get ready to build a new box for my file server at home. My current box is starting to run out of disk space and it's getting old.

I'm looking to reuse my case (Antec Sonata II) and my power supply (Antec 450W). It won't be anything elaborate, probably a dual core AMD, 2-4GB of RAM, onboard video, onboard audio, most likely a 500GB drive for the OS (way too big, but cheap enough) and a pair of Samsung 2TB Spinpoints for my data. 1 to house data, and 1 to be a backed up copy of that first drive.

I expect I will be able to get everything for around $350. Won't need to spend any money on licensing as I will run CentOS linux on it.

Actually, I have changed my mind slightly and think i will go with something such as the following for my new file server. This CPU provides way more power than the AMD II X2 250, and substantially less power consumption. It's about $130, versus $60...but given power savings and such I think it will be worth it.

    Intel Core i3-2100t (35w) CPU

Intel BOXDZ68DB LGA 1155 Intel Z68 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s mobo with USB 3.0
    Newegg.com - Intel BOXDZ68DB LGA 1155 Intel Z68 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

2 x 2TB Samsung EcoGreen Hard drives (1 for data, 1 for a backup drive synchronized every 6 hours to data drive)
    Newegg.com - SAMSUNG EcoGreen F4 HD204UI 2TB 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive

1 x 320GB Western Digital Caviar Blue Hard Drive (OS) (While WAY TOO BIG for my needs, I don't save enough by going smaller).
Newegg.com - Western Digital Caviar Blue WD3200AAKX 320GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive

    4GB G.Skill DDR3 1333Mhz RAM with Cas 8 timings

    My total cost is $485.
