Windows 7: Weird Overclock

16 Jan 2011   #11

I am looking at getting the 750w Modular from Corsair. Modular so I am able to do good cable management.

I am also looking at getting x2 6990.

Windows 7 Ultimate x64, # Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit

Some times the voltage is not right too,
Do you adjust the voltage? or is it on auto?

It sounds like it's not your processor, but your GPU(s.) If your GPU overheats it will crash your system just like a processor OC. Often, you can go back and look at your "Event Viewer" and see what caused your crash.

I bet it's your GPU, especially if you've got it overclocked at all. Try a Furmark or OCCT benching test (both free) and see if you get glitches or artifacting or crash!

You should also have both of these programs when overclocking Gpu-z and CPU-z
Download TechPowerUp GPU-Z v0.5.1 | techPowerUp

CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting

Gpu-z will monitor heat and clock speeds among other things.
CPU-Z will monitor your CPU voltages and overclocks

If you're going to overclock you need to visit forums like Overclockers Forums - The Performance Computing Community

I get the feeling you're just guessing at stuff or doing what others say do - that's OK to a certain extent..... but you need to have an understanding of why you're doing stuff - example: tweaking voltages.

Overclocking without having an understanding is just begging for disaster.

As for your BSOD's.... it could be caused by anything.... not just a power supply..... especially since you're overclocking.... which is where you will see a lot of BSOD's if the voltages/settings are wrong.

My suggestions would be to visit a couple of overclocking forums, read and ask questions.

My two cents.

I have now solved the problem. The overclock was unstable due to a cheap power supply. I have now replaced it with a Corsair AX 750 and works fab!

Thanks for all the help.
