    Overclock Question / Theory

Right now I have my i7 920 Clocked to 4Ghz. Now Im just wondering, in comparison to say a Intel Core i7-995x Extreme edition STOCK, my processor is technically FASTER for simple single threaded applications.

But of course when it comes down to multitasking programs the 975 will beat me due to its more advanced architecture and higher caches.

Basically what Im trying to get at here, is that my processor IS faster rite now, but cant DO as mucH? (if that makes any sense)

Or am I totally wrong, that regardless of my faster clock speed the 995x will still open things faster?

Are you refering to the 990 Extreme hexacore?

I believe that if you are using a 64bit application that can support all of the threads, the 990 will be significantly faster.

But any app using up to a maximum of 4 cores, the OCd 920 may have a edge VS the stock 990.

But remember, the extreme can be overclocked as well negating any advantages.

The Core i7-920 has 8MB of cache, while the 995X has 12MB of cache...this will make some difference. The i7-920 has a 4.8GT/s I/O bus while the 995X has 6.4GT/s. And the uncore speed of the 995x is higher at 2677 versus the i7-920 at 2133.

Clock speed isn't everything. If it were, the 3.4Ghz Pentium 4's would outperform newer machines...but they don't.
