My crystal ball is in for repair.
Mind reading capabilities are on strike too...

It would better enable us to help you if you would fill in
    your system specs.
    FYI.

Again this is a bit like eliminating the obvious first.
    1. Clean laptop completely by blowing out with compressed air and using a vacuum on the exhaust side. If possible please open up the back and inspect for dust build up, clean all with air if needed then replace all panels and re-test.
    2. If the unit continues to hang and overheat then you need to make sure the CPU fan is working properly (spinning) if it is then it's time to ask you how old this unit is and could it still be under some warranty? If it's not then the fan is likely the culprit and again I need to ask if this laptop has any warranty period left?
    3. If the fan is spinning and the heat and hanging up is continuing and the unit is out of warranty then we may have to consider re-applying the thermal compound but this is a last step as an i5 laptop shouldn't need this so soon unless it was poorly done at the factory.
First things first and let's tackle the cleaning and fan spinning or not questions first. One last thing as well is please feel and listen to the HDD as this could also be the source of hanging and tremendous heat if it is beginning to fail.
    4. When is this hanging and heat happening, how many minutes from boot to hang? Are you using this on a table, bed or on your lap? Do you have a laptop cooler stand?

Following on from my friend linnemeyerhere's excellent advice & questions...

Using compressed air for cleaning difficult to access areas is important.
Make sure you read the instructions carefully before applying.

While using your laptop in the lap, don't block the small holes that ventilate the air to your machine, as it heats your laptop as well as your lap!

Are you using a Laptop cooling pad?
These devices plug into a USB port on your laptop, which powers one or two fans designed to suck hot air away from the system.

They work well & are not cumbersome.
In fact the laptop is better balanced sitting on one.

Taking the panels of my HP or my Gateway laptops was a breeze, just be methodical and keep screws in a place where they won't get lost. My new HP doesn't even have screws to open it up directly to the CPU fan......real nice design. I'm not sure about your's but it will open up. You may need to locate a manual via a Google search. Go slow and keep track of the screws and use a good set of jewelers screw drivers and then see what the inside tells us. To clean I like old tooth brushes, paint brushes and Q-Tips with compressed air. Please clean the fan blades completely then with a moist Q-Tip wash them and dry them with a dry Q-Tip.
Please give us the exact full detailed model number if your lappy !
