Three Radeon HD 7970s - Monster PC

X79. CrossFireX. XMP. This month I’m going to build a gaming rig that tears our benchmarks a new one. Or several new ones
Editor's Note, 4/16/12: When I built this rig for the April 2012 print edition, the Nvidia GTX 680 had not been released. Also, all prices listed were accurate as of the time this rig was built; many have now dropped...

I bet 3 gtx 680's will probably beat it usually nvdia wins unless amd really got some horse power this time but i doubt it but it's possible.

Agreed. Plus, the xfire and 3way xfire support has been extremely hit or miss on the new 7k series. I am certain that out of two identical builds, except for the 3way GPUS(one being 680s the other 7970s), the Nvidia version would leave the ATI version, sobbing and searching for a new meaning for it's life.....

If you know the hd 6990 will beat a 580-590 Gtx wouldn't a hd7990 be a upgrade from the 6900?

Tri -fire Amd still holds the Fastest GPU record Nvidia's are good Card but remember There power Consumption is way more then a tri fire set up

That's always Nvidia's drawback they eat too much power

Not to Hijack lol but yes they will out perform a three 7970's but when the 7990 comes out Nvidia back at the Bottom im afraid

ye anyways i love this competition between the two companies, more competition means better hardware and lowering on prices so you buy theirs.I say they will both be good but nvdia is more likely to come out with a better gpu unless amd makes another one that leaves it in the dirt.

Either setup would still be a killer compared to an 'average' one.

(but I do shudder when I think about tri CF/SLI and drivers)
