If you're not using the iGPU you can always set initate IGPU to disabled in the BIOS.

Fingers crossed that nailed it

You stirred a long-dormant memory from my past.

Back in the Socket 7 Days I spent about six months wrestling with an ASUS A7V. It would have actually been better if it had been a total loser, since I would have wasted less time with it than I did. It had a remarkable knack for running fine for weeks, then going on a three-day crapfest. If a motherboard could behave like a binge-drinking alcoholic, this was it.
lol, that boards sounds like my P5Q Pro. The first one had bad dimm slots. The replacement just had a 'gremlin'.

Similar deal, it would be stable for X amount of time, passed multiple 50+ IBT, 24hr P95 and memtest runs and then go on a BSOD rampage for a few days and then go back to being stable. Rinse repeat. It sent me wild at times.

Only ever happened when overclocking though. Now it's a 24/7 machine at stock speeds and 99% BSOD free.

You're right about preferring it to be a dud straight away. To this day I never did nail the exact problem it had.

My P6X58D premium was a good board from the get go and my current P8Z68 has been good to me so far too.

The only minor niggle I have with it is that every now then on a cold boot or restart, it fails to initialize the drives which needs a quick reset and it's all good. I suspect it has something to do with the RAID, or the controller.

One upside to a bad board / components is that it makes you appreciate it when you finally get a good combo

I am not using Virtu, but I am using the iGPU for a second display, so have to have it enabled in BIOS. With two monitors you don't need Virtu to take advantage of the iGPU transcoding, etc.

GeneO, I missed your post about the Nvidia drivers. I hope between that and the BIOS update you have smooth sailing from here on out.

I hope you have it running right too. It seemed like a good board, I just couldn't get it far enough along to tell. Good luck with it.

Well it has been three days since I updated the Nvidia graphics driver and I haven't had a freeze since. That was really weird since the card + driver worked fine on my P55. This is solved. The Motherboard, memory and CPu are all working great and it is a big difference from the previos generation - these run faster and cooler at lower volts.

Steve, I know it is too late, but I had some time to peruse the Asus forum for this motherboard. It seems that the non-retention of the BIOS settings is likely due to the board being shipped missing the CMOS jumper, or the jumper not secure. Also, the voltage set in the BIOS more are closer to the actual with the new firmware update.

In any case, I have this running at 4.2 GHz, 1.176 Vcc under load, all other settings per Intel nominal values. I currently have all C states disabled and am using an absolut Vcc setting. Next I will try offset and C1E on. I find those settings give the best response while the C1E reduces the power and voltage enough at idle to get to probably 30c idle (I am currently about 38c idle).

Thanks for the info, Gene. Very nice OC and those voltages are great. I may try it again. I've been going back and forth with myself on that. The board did have the lates bios. Thanks for the info.

No, it didn't. I checked the website and it had the latest there. But, it was not 3101.

It is now

I am at 4.3 GHz now, stable and 1.192V Vcc loaded. I am always happy with an easy 1 GHz overclock

It's great being able to hit such higher overclocks whilst keeping the power saving features enabled compared to previous generations. I love the 'best of both worlds' this new architecture provides

As for idle temps, what are your ambient temps?

I've found that even with it idle @ 1600ghz ~.900 v and an ambient between 27c/80F - 30c/86F, idle temps are still around the high 30 mark.

With a lower ambient of 24c/75F-26c/78F and lower is when you see the idle temps drop to around 30c and below.

Temps aside, the less Wattage being used makes it worth it for that alone.

To satisfy my personal curiosity; as a 'real world' encoding test I've been been comparing exactly how much difference there is between 4.6ghz and 5ghz.

I'm using ConvertXtoDVD to convert a few 1080P+DTS movie rips to regular ac3 2ch DVD and the FPS encode speed is virtually negligible between 4.6ghz and 5ghz.

At 5ghz, you're lucky to see a few extra FPS. The entire conversion process length itself is practically the same.

Shits and giggles aside, going for a 'max' overclock is just not worth the extra heat and volts.

On an unrelated note, I'm happy to say my 2133mhz 1.65v RAM kit runs just as well at 1.6v. I've also been able to lower my VCCIO volts too

Nice

You should have very little/no issues enabling the C states whilst maintaining your OC.

It is a great board (when it's not a dud that is ), but if your current Asrock is doing the job, then it's all good
