Best overclocking software?

Is there any software you can install (on Win 7 Pro) that enables you to over clock and see all the performance settings and get performance results after tinkering with overclock settings.

I've never looked in to this before so I thought I'd see if anybody knows of some specific software names (websites would be helpful) that can do this.

It's modern... it's new new PC running Win 7 pro, so there should be some programs that can handle whatever it is that I have right?

Any recommendations that anyone may have would be appreciated.

Rockrz,
Welcome to SF. The best way to over-clock your desktop rig is via it's bios settings. Understand that any overclocking will stress your components and especially the CPU cooler. Pay close attention to heat and read and read some more, go slow, take notes and don't over clock anything you can't afford to replace.

OK, any leads on a program that allows me to monitor the temp of my PCU?

And, are there any good write ups on overclocking a modern PC that contains all the basic knowledge along with some good advice?

I'm not looking for massive gains. Just wanted to tweak for a little better performance without damaging anything.

Coretemp, Speedfan, Realtemp, Aidax64 (I personally prefer coretemp. Aida is also good, but the free version has some 'missing' features.)

Plenty. Unfortunately 'modern PC' is far too vague.

Realistically we need to know:

Intel or AMD

Cpu model

Motherboard Model.

A program like Speccy or HWInfo32 can help with that.

(And is this a pre-built desktop machine from a large Company ie HP, Dell, or bought from a local shop? Some pre-built models from the big companies have what is called a 'locked BIOS' which essentially means that all the necessary settings to OC are unavailable.)

Whilst the fundamentals are the same across chip types, boards - the specifics are not. (Different names for the same function etc)

Done right, the risk of damage is minute.
