I had some sound reasoning typed out, but I realized I don't care. You do the research and the homework and come up with a good air cooler that works good and looks good. Good luck with that! Most of them look like garbage, and take up half of the internal space in your case, oh, and using them with dual fans will potentially block some RAM slots, unless you bought low profile RAM. Noctua/Phanteks air coolers start at about $80 and go up from there. If you want a 5lb chunk of aluminum hanging precariously off the side of your motherboard go ahead......if that's the look you are going for.

    Good Luck

To the OP: The tower design probably works the best, but they do take up a lot of space and don't look good IMO. Water cooling may be "dull" but it looks very sleek and clean, AND gets the job done.

The Phaenteks or Silver arrow don't look like garbage.

In order to sufficiently cool a Ivy Bridge without howling fans you indeed need a larger cooler with lots of surface area, sure.

The 212s will not sufficiently cool it @ 4.8 even with fans running flat out loud.

Two fans on a cooler don't block RAM anymore than one fan. Configured in a push 1 fan configuration, the fan is on the memory side. A two fan configuration merely adds another fan on the non-memory side (for most motherboards that do not have RAM on both sides of the CPU). Any air cooler you may have clearance problems. And so what if you have a large cooler hanging off of the motherboard - the backplate sufficiently spreads the load. Are you saying that this could damage the motherboard? If so back it up. Otherwise why should you care?

So lets here your sound reasoning, or if you really don't care, just don't reply. You sure have a bug up it, Darth.

Clean is what water does in spades.

yeah, I find tower-like coolers with two fans UGLY, which is why I started this thread. It's a personal preference, I know that they are more or less on par with watercooling as far as OC ivy bridges go but I dislike the looks.

Still, the discussion above made me think about another possible issue. The computer is going to be lan-party machine so it will travel a lot more than the average desktop, and I'd rather not have to drive like my granma when the PC is onboard.
Does that shift the equation in favor of watercooling?

Easily, as newegg doesn't ship to Italy, lol. Sadly that thing is still sold for around 80 euro (105$) in all e-stores selling to Italy. (and I have no clue of physical stores selling high-end computer hardware)

Besides, all watercooling I can find look like black boxes and car radiators with case fans bolted on and I'm not that thrilled by the looks of that... since I don't really need very high overclocks NAO!!!1!1! (hey it's still a 3770 after all) I'll wait and keep the stock cooler for now, and hope Zalman's leaked Reserator 3 is put on sale and doesn't suck (with 400W of cooling power it shouldn't, but maybe it's noisy)

If you have cool closed-loop watercooling solutions (at least those that don't look like a car's radiator), tell me.

All water cooled systems require a car radiator, so maybe a Noctua air is your best bet and don't worry about the LAN parties as it has a large retention plate, but other issue could need addressing such as case and ram clearance.

Go with the Antec 620 Khuler man that thing works just as good as H80 OR H100 My Temps are always Frosty You can always add High end fans to this and it adapts well 120 mm I'm going to purchase another for my MSI rig with 8120 fx cpu
