I set speed step to enabled and have the multiplier at 10 and cpuz goes nuts, is the a bad cpu or something ?
So if I step up my power supply to the HX750 will I be able to turn off speed stepping and not get a blue screen ?
I can`t believe this power supply can`t push this small upgrade of a chip.
What do you mean by "goes nuts"? It's supposed to fluctuate dynamically based on the loading conditions. The latest version of CPU-Z has a much more accurate engine. If you were to use a much older version of CPU-Z, then you wouldn't get to see what's actually going on. CPUs are naturally far less "stable" in this sense than we have all been led to believe by programs like CPU-Z. They never stop fluctuating because they can't. I'm not sure how to explain it though.
It may have already been cutting it way too close, and so the E8600 might be just sending it over the edge. That is, if it's even the PSU. Although, I'm limited in that I don't know what else it could be.
If it's the PSU, you wouldn't have to get the HX750. A perfect fit for your system would be about a 550W PSU (a quality-made unit of course). Even a 450W would be alright, so 550W isn't the minimum.
But it`s an Ultra LSP 550 Pro Lifetime Series with 30 amps on the +12v rail. It`a a piece of junk ? It`s brand new and works flawlessly.
And it finally bumped up the cpu score from 6.3 to 6.7 .
I'm personally not sure. Although, in my 4+ years on Overclock.net (about 18 hours per day sadly), I've never seen anyone say anything good about Ultra's PSUs. I don't know if that means they're all bad, but it tells me that I will never recommend any of them. I have learned, however, that this particular PSU is pretty low in quality and should usually be avoided - especially if you want to overclock anything. To be very honest, I had to ask about it just to be sure.
Ultra just isn't a good brand for PSUs (although, I don't go just by brand names).
It's major overkill, but yeah.

If it absolutely must be a 650W power supply (no need, not even for two GTX 680s), then don't get the HX650 because there are other high-quality 650W PSUs that have better connectivity. Newegg's site is wrong: the HX650 only has 2 x 6+2-pin PCI-E cables, not 4 (I had to check Corsair's site one day because someone told me about it).
So, here's a PSU that's just as good (if not better), it costs less, and it has 4 x 6+2-pin PCI-E cables:
