I dropped this rig off to a dear friend last weekend and he was stunned, it was so nice to recycle some parts, buy some new parts and put all in a great case. It looks great and runs like a top. Adding the SSD helped and 8gb of DDR2.

He was trying make make some 10 year old rig work and running out of options. At every turn it was another problem and not being there with the rig he just kept getting more and more frustrated. This brings him into a sweet spot where this should last a good long time. Also installed a 1 tb spinner for his data as the SSD is my original Crucial 64gb.

Alan, what a lovely gesture for a friend. In this day and age it's nice to see that at least some folk are generous and kind hearted.

Alright boys & girls, I'm looking to build a high performance system since my old Q6600 backup system is starting to act up. What does that mean? Well, if that system goes, I have to share my current system (first gen i7. See system spec) with the rest of the family... and that just can't happen

So, the new system will replace this one, and this will replace the Q660 system. It's ready to retire anyway.

That said, I've been wanting to get one of the newer processors, mainly the Intel i7-3930K Hexa-Core. I'm trying to decide on which z79 motherboard to get. I've thus far looked at these motherboards...

    - ASUS x79 Rampage IV Extreme
    - ASRock X79 Extreme 9

I plan on getting a minimum of 16 gig of RAM. Probably this - Corsair DOMINATOR Platinum Series 16GB

As for graphics (AMD only), I'll just go with a single high end card. Still don't trust Crossfire.

No I'm not made of money, but in all my time owning and building computers, I've never once had what I consider a high end system. This time I'm going for it. Just have to save my pennies over the next coming months - by Sept.

Anyway I could use a few suggestions. It's been a while since I've actually looked at this stuff, especially motherboards.

    Thanks :)

BTW, what's the story on Haswell? New chip, different motherboard?
Sygnus, I responded to your post last night not long after you posted it. Nothing major, but your current system is a pretty darn good system. I don't think I said anything worthwhile, and nothing that hasn't been said here. But it sounds like you have selected some very good components. Good luck and let us know how it goes. https://www.sevenforums.com/overclock...ml#post2407708

I'm not sure why I didn't get notifications of the last several posts here, but it seems I missed a good conversation. Ask for rig pics and Alan is always the first to respond. That was certainly a good thing you did Alan. A friend indeed.

I missed Kelly wanting to make a server for Paul's 12 Gigs of Porn and all this stuff. You just can't miss a day on this thread.
