Even Gary said 25 what ? lol

    But in reality it is 24 not 25 16 x then a 8x 16+4=20 +4=24 lanes

Nope, I'm using 25 lanes: x16 for the GPU, 8X for the HBA card, and 1x for the card reader combo. The board has six slot x16 long but only two are actually x16, two are x8 (paired up with the x16 lane slots; populating both will result in only x8 each), and two 4x.

ahhh card reader so nice I have one of those too but via USB there was a time I was a USB junkie but im sure the card reader is just that much faster off of the PCI-E lanes

Have you looked into a TV tuner I was thinking of getting one because I have to battle my kid and wife for TV and I used to have one so now since you mentioned it what brand are you going for ?

Well thanks, I didn't know that X16 meant 16 lanes.

Don't even feel bad I did a double take in a half and had to get myself correct lol

That is why I asked to explain themselves but in part I did kinda figure that was their formula in getting that 25 number Shoot you learn something new everyday and we're never to old to learn I don't care if your over 100 years old someone can teach you something lol

That was one of the selling points for the X79 platform.....it supports up to 40 PCI Express lanes natively. So you can have a graphics card, RAID card, sound card, etc, and all of them will have all the lanes they require to run at maximum performance available.

Don't feel bad; I only learned it recently, fortunately before I settled on the parts for my rig.

That was the selling point for me.

Looking to build a high performance system...

Alright boys & girls, I'm looking to build a high performance system since my old Q6600 backup system is starting to act up. What does that mean? Well, if that system goes, I have to share my current system (first gen i7. See system spec) with the rest of the family... and that just can't happen

So, the new system will replace this one, and this will replace the Q660 system. It's ready to retire anyway.

That said, I've been wanting to get one of the newer processors, mainly the Intel i7-3930K Hexa-Core. I'm trying to decide on which z79 motherboard to get. I've thus far looked at these motherboards...

    - ASUS x79 Rampage IV Extreme
    - ASRock X79 Extreme 9

I plan on getting a minimum of 16 gig of RAM. Probably this - Corsair DOMINATOR Platinum Series 16GB

As for graphics (AMD only), I'll just go with a single high end card. Still don't trust Crossfire.

No I'm not made of money, but in all my time owning and building computers, I've never once had what I consider a high end system. This time I'm going for it. Just have to save my pennies over the next coming months - by Sept.

Anyway I could use a few suggestions. It's been a while since I've actually looked at this stuff, especially motherboards.

    Thanks :)

BTW, what's the story on Haswell? New chip, different motherboard?
