ok, so im looking in my bios and i see CPU FSB frequency, CPU ratio, CPU NB ratio, max turbo core ratio, turbo core ratio, cpu voltage, cpu nb voltage. now since i only want to increse base cpu frequency, i will only change cpu ratio (NOT fsb or nb ratio) , and for turbo, i only adjust turbo core ratio too?
then boot into windows. if no boot, increase CPU voltage (NOT cpu nb voltage) then keep repeating.... then run prime 95 for 12-24hrs?
Quad, I can tell you didn't read the links posted earlier. Turbo is one way you OC, and the CPU multiplier is another.... never do both. Now I am going to post another link. It shows info on OCing for MSI, with screenshots.
MSI Overclocking
Yeah my first big time board 990 FX GD80
Board looks super nice but if you plan to over clock through bios you might as well forget it V-core can't go passed 1.44volts
only way around it is there little program they give you to adjust voltages and what not though windows and the OC Genie never used it to afraid it might do more damage to my rig then I would do myself
In the end I had to RMA that board because my nephew was playing resident evil ORC and the motherboard at 4.5 ghz blew up mosfets that is my pc started smoking I ran in a hurry shut off the psu unplugged everything
opened up my case after about a half hour pretty much caught fire there was a big burn mark on the inside of the case panel you can smell all of it burning so I took out everything and it was all in tact except the crappy MB then RMA process was a joke I dropped my MB off in person to MSI and it took them almost 2 months to get me another board and mind you I didn't ship it I went directly to there RMA center
after using the second board I just got fed up and went ASUS and now im totally where I should be
from what im understanding by just looking at multiplier VS. CPU frequency, my cpu ratio stock set is at .19 giving me the 3.8ghz base. so in order to increse only the base frequency, i need to change the multiplier to x20.0 to give me the 4ghz. no watching the multipliers, when turbo core is active, cpu boosts to 4ghz and the ratio is x20 to get that 4ghz. so to increase the turbo frequency, i will have to increase turbo core ratio to like x21 or something like that to get the 4.5ghz turbo mode. and adjust the voltages as required.
correct me if im wrong. im just observing things rite now. i gave that link you posted a really quick skim. im not doing anything or changing anything now, im just trying to learn the process.
also like i said before, i do not want to OC anything else other then the CPU maybe RAM. just the CPU for now.
I use Intel, but I would think AMD is pretty much the same. With the MSI board, I would leave the CPU Multiplier at auto, enable turbo and enhanced turbo. and adjust the core multipliers to your target of 4.5.
im confused. lol
As you should be and hence why reading, going slow, asking questions and only risking what you can afford to lose is so important. I would start with a simple multiplier bump, burn that in with a good test and run the system for a couple days watching temps at stock voltages. With your PSU I would be very careful when applying voltage as it's my belief that when it runs out of gas it could take more then itself down. IMHO that would be the next target upgrade.
