Yes, SOME Haswell CPU's can hit 4.6GHz+, but it is fairly uncommon in the early batches of chips. Most of the chips will fall into the 4.0-4.5GHz range. It's like a lottery, the more you play, the better your chances of hitting it big. With Ivy Bridge, most of the chips would hit 4.5GHz no problem, and some would hit 5.....the chances of getting a better than average chip was higher with Ivy Bridge than Haswell.
Heat is the only problem if im right so if you have good water cooling maybe you would get away with overclocking
I had a chat with someone about overclocking haswell if you have a great water cooling setup maybe
some people have said even stock speeds on an intel cooler its hot
The cooler can only do so much. The chips have barriers and no matter what setup you have, once you hit it, you've reached the limit. Special circumstances would be LN2 and other exotic solutions.
I think if you want a CPU in this league, the i7 3770K is still a good and proven bet. I read too many negative comments about the Haswell (including special PSU requirements) that I would not touch it.
The thing I'm holding my breath about is that when I built my current rig I was reading that Ivy Bridge-E was going to come out on Socket 2011. Figured it was a good upgrade path, since I wasn't going to wait. But that was only speculation at the time.
Anyone heard what platform it will actually be on?
