Just on the CPU should be fine . Some heat sinks that come with CPUs already come with thermal paste preapplied. If you want to remove the thermal paste off use a Q-tip and rubbing alcohol .
A clean, dry surface is very important. After you clean the CPU surface, take a coffee filter and lightly get anything left over off of it. If you have a normal style CPU Heatsink, squeeze out a bit of paste about the size of a grain of rice right in the middle of the CPU. Seat your cooler on it, give it a very tiny twist clockwise and counterclockwise without taking the cooler off of the CPU and start tightening it down. If there are 4 screws to hold it down, tighten in an X pattern until snug. After you have them all torqued fairly evenly and snugged down good, you may want to give them another 1/8 of a turn.
Turn your computer on and open up whatever temp monitoring software you have.....RealTemp, Core Temp, etc. Let it idle for about 30 minutes and keep an eye on the temps. If the idle temps are good and you see no spikes in the temperature, go ahead and stress test it for 30 minutes to an hour. You want to stay right there with it in case it spikes up and you need to stop stressing it. After you have that done, check the bolts to make sure they are still very snug.
The key is less is more and then doing a little pre-tighten wiggle and then finally go real slow tightening in that X pattern as stated above. Once a little snug let the rig rest for 2-5 minutes then come back and just tighten up to good and snug not cranked down point. Run the rig and watch then double check for good and snug and most pastes will burn in for several hours and some take days.
Thanks to all of you for replying !
Im using 96 % alcohol btw :)
I've found this kit to be the best !
Arcticlean 1 and 2, Surface Cleaner, 60ml Kit - Amazon.com
I'd order that if I lived in the USA,but im from EU and it would take 1 month to ship in...
You can live without it but in your travels if you find a Artic Silver dealer/shop then they should have this kit and it works great.
Hi RazzerCro
Some thermal compounds come with an applicator - brush/spreader etc., try to keep and even coverage on the CPU :)
