Who knew? But, who was behind the camera? Even if it was remote control, somebody was watching.
Hi all,
I've decided to hold off on the CPU/MoBo/RAM upgrade for a while, I may wait to see what Haswell-E has to offer.
It's not a money thing (although not spending money is always better), my present system still does what I want it to do, and does it quite well. It doesn't matter to me if it isn't the fastest or most powerful.
That doesn't mean that I'm going to stop tinkering, though. It was mentioned elsewhere that a rig is never truly finished.
So, with that in mind, I thought that I'd like to have a bit more RAM. Didn't want to buy used, so I had a look at the various vendors and settled on this kit x 2.
Yep, I bought brand new DDR2 PC2-8500 RAM.
However, I'm going to have to send one kit back (seems to be a trend around here).
There's something wrong with one stick, I can make it into the BIOS but it always freezes just a few seconds after opening. Of course I've defaulted the BIOS and flashed the latest revision but that one stick always fails.
For now, I've put one of the G.Skill kits in with the Kingston Hyper-X and tested thoroughly so I can have my 8 GB right now. The Kingston was already Overclocked (from 800MHz to 1098MHz) and the G.Skill had no trouble matching it. I'm hoping that the RAM will OC higher yet when I have both of the PC2-8500 kits installed.
Is it worth it? Probably not, as an effective speed/power boost. But it does give me something new to play with.

I have always used G Skill because their ram is good they have a lifetime warranty and excellent tech support. I have G Skill in all my rigs. I have never had any luck mixing brands though. I hope your luck is better. But, you're correct, a build is never completed. I always try to buy parts for my current build that could be used in a next build. Maybe that's why I have 8 SSDs and a ton of all speeds and types of G Skill ram.
Lava King - Nice ram mate, yeah G-skill is very good memory, I usually stick with Corsair, but it's a personal thing, and yeah, you never stop upgrading lol, in my case I found a new hobby that takes up all my time, but plan on doing a full upgrade near February, new tubes etc. But I recently find it hard to upgrade while my rig still outperforms the games I play on it...
welcome back, Alsisgevat. I always like it when you come around. But, I hate to be the one who tells you this. But, around here we don't upgrade because we need to. We do it because we want to and it's in our blood. Kind of like, 'The Devil made me do it.' It can become habit forming.
Nice Lava King, now You get to Add RAM
Is it worth it ? Heck ya it`s worth it, Max out that board
You`ve got a good chip in there and a great card
To bad you had to return a set.
Yes Alsisgevat welcome back.
With your crazy rig you've built yourself into a topflight rig with little if any area to update without a major tear down and lots of components and cooling rethink, you should be happy for still many years with it !
