Time for a new PC, opinions?

    Hi All,

I am building a new PC, my old PC is getting on for 5 years old now and I am starting find games I cannot run with it.

Firstly, I have an Antec 900 case and a SilverstoneTek TJ06 case sitting here from previous PC's and was thinking I could probably avoid buying a case for the new system, is this a good or bad idea? Which case would you suggest I use?

Also, I have an OK monitor that will do for the meantime to enable me to keep costs down for a bit. The same goes for my KB and mouse.

I use an Antc Truepower Trio 650W is my old machine and it still seems to be running fine. Would you suggest replacing it or can I re-use it? Are there any new cables that are now standard in a PSU that this one will not have?

Onto the specs of the new machine, I had put this together:

    EVGA GeForce GTX 780 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (03G-P4-2781-KR)
Intel Core i5-4670K 3.40GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - OEM
    Kingston HyperX Black 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C10 1600MHz Dual Channel Memory Kit (KHX16C10B1BK2/16X)
    Kingston 240GB SSDNow V300 Drive SATA 6Gb/s 3 2.5" (7mm height) Solid State Hard Drive - (SV300S37A/240G)
MSI Z87-G43 Gaming Series Intel Z87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard

    Does this look ok?

How future proof do you think it will be?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

I would suggest a ASUS mobo and you will want a new PSU for that CPU and GPU Probs 750W would be suffice. As for the SSD I would get a smaller 60gb or 120gb. And that will allow for a better psu. And if u like ur case and it has sufficient airflow. U could keep it. But I would change it for something better and new. Just opinion.

For the PSU. I would recommend a corsair. Above 700W should be fine. In would check the wattage of the GPU however. If you get a GPU that exhausts into the case u NEED good airflow.

    Hello Will01,

PSU's can be tricky, I thought my Antec Truepower 750 would be up to the job when I got my EVGA 780 Classified, the PSU was around 2.5 years old, it died the same day I installed the Classy. How old is your current PSU? Maybe I got unlucky but I would also suggest buying a new one with a higher voltage. The 780 requires 2 x 8 Pin PCI-e cables.

Regarding the SSD, I would recommend you get as big as you can, I have a 128GB one and I am forever running out of space and having to clear stuff off it, 250/256GB seems to be the sweet spot right now.

I agree with Noober on the motherboard, but only because I have always had a good experience with ASUS boards, I have to admit I have never owned an MSI board, there are a couple of members on here with one, Dude has one the gaming Z77 and he loves it, so it's up to you on that one.

What is the maximum budget you have set aside for your upgrades? Maybe I can look around and see what I can come up with.

    Paul.

I would say the PSU is a must. I say Asus because I've had 2 out of 2 bad experiences with MSI and personally love Asus. I say smaller ssd because I personally don't have much of anything on my ssd other than os some programs music and pics. But that's me. I would agree to get the biggest if budget allows but since ur on a budget thats why suggest get smaller ssd for better PSU.

Did I miss the mobo or will this system run without, LOL

But seriously - did you investigate an AMD option. They have some real nice Vishera CPUs for adorable prices - at least in the US. And the boards are cheaper too. Intel is pricey.

The motherboard is at the bottom of the list Wolfgang, the MSI Z87 Gaming series.

    Will01,
Welcome to SF and it looks to be a great beginning to your build. That MSI board is getting mad prop's. Regarding the PSU I would go Seasonic Gold or Platinum and at least 850w or push it some and get a 1000w the PSU won't sweat one thing and it will run cool and quiet. Either way you'll need to think about cooling and I would do Noctua air if left stock or very modest OC and sealed water as it's become the norm.
