We base the overclock from the chip's Turbo Boost frequency, otherwise it's not an over clock IMO. A stock clock albeit Turbo.

Mind you here at SF and the real world we use whatever is sent to us. We don't clock one core, I got my place on our leader board even with Hyper-Threading on.

Hmm, who is we? I guess that makes me not part of "we"? That leader board thread is closed and I could find nothing in it regards to what percentage of overclock is related to. I don't think any overclockers anywhere else use the Turbo frequency - they measure it against the base frequency because that is unambiguous.

"We" as I used it means those of us at SF who cuss and discuss overclocking. We use Turbo, no sense running a high OC 24/7. As far as I know "we" don't really pay much attention to a percentage, rather the often elusive 5GHz+.

    This link should work

It reached 200 pages so the mods closed it and continued it.

This will be my last post on this, it is kind of stupid - but I mean no offense.
None of those links can I find any discussion of percentage of overclock or anybody saying the overclock by a percentage. So I don't know how you can speak for a "we' unless you all call each other on the phone or read minds.

GeneO, you brought up the "percentage" with your "35% OC on air" statement. Some members here challenged the number as being a bit high. I feel it's irresponsible to make a claim like that, a newb reads and attempts it, could very well burn his system down. While it is possible for a experienced person with the best equipment, it's not the norm. No one is offended, just a good old fashion argument

The chip in question is an AMD FX 8350 and the temp is almost exactly the same as the FX 8320 in the machine next to it. I think 40C is what these things read sensor wise and run at, the "Package temp" is 20C cooler. I have thrashed them both with Prime 95 and the temp reaches 55 to 58C. 58C is with new heat sink paste so give it a week or so. In any case its bloody cold outside and can use the extra heat
I don't know were I got the i5 from, my bad.

My 8350 idles at or near ambient under water, my cpu package temps follow cpu temps very close. Your max temps of 55 to 58C are right in the ball park.

Yup, I brought that up in my previous post and explained who "we" are.

This is exactly why I asked the questions. I got a healthy discussion from computer buffs wiser in the subject than I. The views and opinions are all welcome but I am not an overclocker. Other than what the bios seems to do automatically with the FX8350 @4.1Ghz and the FX8320 @ 3.7 Ghz.
