    System appears to have died...

    Update...

Having not figured out why the system wouldn't sleep or shutdown unless I constantly held the power button or hit the PS switch, I just let it run that way.

Well today while I was in the room, I heard the system suddenly shut off and thought that was odd given the shutdown/sleep issue. I didn't think to check it out at the time as I was pre-occupied. Well the wife comes home and tries to start it up and it doesn't do anything. I've even toggled the PS switch and still nothing. Seems like something may have died

Anyway I'll troubleshoot it tomorrow and post back, but I'm thinking I may need a new X58 MB as I suspect it was the issue. Dang

    Fixed!!!

Well the issue seems to have resolved itself.

Out of a last resort I did a clear CMOS then loaded optimized settings (again). Did a few tweaks in the BIOS, mainly to get the memory running where it needed since loading optimized settings reset it. PC now sleeps, and shuts down with out restarting. The weird thing is I did a clear CMOS and load optimized settings before and it didn't work. Maybe I missed that step when I did a BIOS update a month ago

Anyway all is good for now so I'm keeping my fingers crossed it stays that way as I really didn't want to have to purchase used X58 board off of e-bay

    Peace

Great news. Glad to hear it, Drew. At least it's working right for now. I wonder if the battery has run down? But, I imagine we covered that part already.

That (the battery) was the initial issue but it was replaced a while back and hasn't been an issue since. I'm now thinking the old BIOS somehow got hosed, and when I updated to the new one, I may have forgot to clear the CMOS, thus carrying over the old issues/settings

Anyway things now seem to be working OK, but I'll keep a close eye on it the next couple of days.

    Thanks.

I did have a similar issue once with this board and I'm not sure what happened. I ended up flashing the same bios on it, and everything straightened out. I really have no idea what caused it, I can only assume that somehow, the bios got corrupted, and re flashing it fixed it. But, That's just a guess on my part.

Possible cause can be a short to power or ground in the motherboard which could damage the bios. Once the bios are damaged all other testing and troubleshooting tell one nothing until the bios are as they should be.
But like essenbe that is also a guess on my part.

Yeah, looking back at everything from the time the battery mysteriously drained to the issue at hand, I'm inclined to believe there was some sort of short that caused issues with the BIOS, and that by updating it to a new one and clearing the CMOS (again), the issue somehow resolved itself. Like everyone here, that's my guess as well. However, a physical inspection of the board a while back revealed no scorch or short marks so...

Just a weird issue all the way around, especially since I never had any trouble with it when it was my main system in my HAF X case. But.. it appears to be fixed now so lets hope it stays that way.

Well all is good. A week later and no issues. I can safely say the issue is fixed for good.

    Thanks to all who've replied.

    Peace

That's great news. I'm glad to hear it, probably not as glad as you, but happy still. Congratulations, well done.

I'm just happy I don't have to hear the wife fuss. For a minute I thought I was going to have to find parts to build another system since no one uses mine.
