Is it really overheating, bad sensor, or another problem?

No wonder you are having so many issues with your build that board is not made for a FX chip

Your readings will never be correct that board is not even no where near a FX boards standards

FX chips only work will with 990FX chipsets not 760 or 780 880 or any G platform they keep trying to push

Get the right board and you will get the correct results some of these retailers like ASUS and MSI rebranded boards from 2 Generations ago so they could still make due with stock terrible mistake and very dangerous as it's not correctly calibrated to handle the FX voltage output

I'm no stranger to negative program interactions either. I've decided to use the monitoring software that came with the board, EasyTune6. Attached a screenshot of the highest temp it reached under load on the 11th. I'm running similar loads today which I'll compare with two other programs though not at the same time.

Solarstarshines: The screenshot you posted is of the computer I'm currently using. Not the one this thread is about. The only thing they have in common is an AMD FX-4130 Processor. This is a custom build (sort of) and that one is a iBuyPower NE690FX (with a few upgrades) I received as a gift.
What are your thoughts about an AMD FX-8350 with this board: BIOSTAR TA970 AM3+ AMD 970 + SB950 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard with UEFI BIOS - Newegg.com

It needs to be a 990FX not a 970 you can buy a 970 Board all day long and it will still give the same issues

LeonDroid the only reason the 990fx is better for that chip is phase control

or Power management the 970 can run that chip but it will not run like it's supposed to

Unfortunately, swapping motherboards isn't an option for me. Doing so voids my W7 OEM licenses even if I could afford them.

Back to the subject of this thread.
I'm going to leave the computer running for an extended period. Although I don't know of any way to monitor BIOS temps while the machine is under load, there are two programs that seem to be within 1 or 2 degrees when I do an immediate restart to check. That few seconds is still enough time for EasyTune6 to show a 20 degree drop in temperature though.
Thanks to everyone for your help and suggestions. I'd like to leave this thread open while I monitor the computer for awhile to see how it does.
Another question: how do I find out the date windows was installed on a machine? I've tried two things. One gives me a 2013 date, the other a 2009 date and neither of them can be right.
