Dell Desktop 620 Power up

Hello all, I have a Dell Inspiron 620 that I would like to supercharge.

I currently have an i3 CPU/8gb ram and looked at upgrading the CPU to and i5 or i7. Most advised me that either it couldn't be done or that the increase in performance would be negligible. They cited BIOS and Chipset issues as well as power consumption current(s) that would be a deterrent to using the existing MB.

So with a budget of around 600 bucks for a new MB/CPU, what can I do to set this 4 year old Dell on fire and increase all around performance?

thanks addram, "who and most" were googled replies and some actually came from the dell community forum. I forgot to add current graphic card is a nVidia geForce gtx 770 with 2gb ram! The current onboard bios and chipset will/would have no problem recognizing an i5 such as you suggest above? and the SSD is a doable option now that the prices are falling. yeah and putting perfume on this pig was in hindsight Not as best an idea as a newer case MB, CPU, faster ram and an SSD!

Yup I've replaced those slimline power supplies before, it's a bit of a trick but went from 300w to 550w. And someone else tried to tell me I could go up to 16gb ram(apparently not according to the specs above), I thought I was maxed out at 8gb. and it seems as though a CPU upgrade to and i5 cpu IS possible, I just wonder if there's a different chipset or BIOS in the i5 version of the Inspiron 620? Without going the new MB/Case/CPU/PwrSply/SSD drive route, I think I'll upgrade nVidia graphics to 960-980, upgrade the power supply to 550w, go to the i5 CPU (assuming there's no BIOS/Chipset issues) and get a SSD harddrive. anyway nothing is in concrete yet still doing some checking.

For the mentioned $600 budget I'd just go for a new computer with the full warranty. Some good examples:

The main problem usually is with getting the parts for an upgrade and if warranty service is needed, will have to deal with more than one company.
I haven't purchased a new Dell or other brand Desktop but have rehabbed several, one is a Dell Inspiron 580 which came with Win7 but will become my main Win10 Desktop after its release.
