    Fan cooler vs. Case (size)

As I mentioned in my other thread, I'm looking at a Haswell-E CPU. I'm NOT getting a water cooler. It is simply out of the question. However, I'm having a hard time determining if a Noctua NH-D15 will fit inside of a Fractal Design Define R5. Anyone have experience with this?

    Hi,
    Is this the case ?
Fractal Design Define R5 FD-CA-DEF-R5-BK Black Computer Case - Newegg.com
If so heck it shows over 9" thick :)

With the price of this liquid is only a fraction more but if you don't want to take a chance on liquid and possible leaking I can understand that concern

    Fractal Design

    where it says:

CPU coolers up to 180mm in height.

Noctua.at - sound-optimised premium components "Designed in Austria"!

    where it says:

    Height (with fan): 165 mm

It's that 15mm difference that makes me nervous...

I don't know why it would make you nervous. That's over a half inch.

I recently installed a Noctua cooler into an Antec case with a differential of 2mm. No issues at all. Clearance under 1/10 of an inch.

The dimensions per Noctua and per Fractal Design may be totally erroneous. That's a remote possibility. You'd have to find a person who has personally installed that cooler in that case to get over that notion.

If you accept that 15mm is correct, go ahead as planned. If you don't, then try to find some other combination of case and cooler for which you have more confidence in the published dimensions--for some reason.

I didn't look but they might have a unit with 120mm fans instead of the 140mm fans ?

    That is a interesting design
Most would simply blow towards the mobo but I guess that is the advantage of blowing towards the exhaust instead :)

Mmhmm. Plus larger coolers = more surface area = more cooling.

The D15 has better cooling performance than most AIOs and I'm not up to spend a couple grand on a closed loop. I know most AIOs won't leak, but that is also a concern of mine. Additionally, the D15 is quieter than most (if not possibly all) AIOs and since my build is being optimized for quiet performance for workstation use, and there's no fancy side window, I find myself partial toward the air cooler.

An AIO with decent performance would mean removing two of the top moduvents from my case, which I am counting on being in place to aid in acoustics, to make way for the radiator.
