AMD Phenom x6

Anyone here had experience with the New Phenom(the Thuban i think) its the hexacore ones? Planning on getting that badboy and overclocking it like crazy! But as always - any help would be great :P
Never OC'd a AMD before - is the "Black" edition recommended - the extra 100 dollars is not a problem. :P

You don't show Prime95 for your torture testing. Do you not recommend it for AMD processors and why?

Out of 2 Phenom II 940 blacks that I set up. I was able to get one of them to run stable at 3.6 the other would not come in stable because of heat issues with the ram.

The systems were exactly the same with the main difference being the ram. I kept running into issues with the kingston hyperX. It is 1066 DDR2 and when I ordered it I got one of the first batches before they changed the heatsink on them. They run hot enough that you can burn your finger touching them. The solution was to order a fan that mounts over the dimms clipping to the tabs that secure the ram sticks and just cool the ram off with that.

So not that I wouldn't recommend hyperX I just got an early batch with a poor cooling solution. They have since added a larger heatsink to these that has a fin on top of the stick that adds about 1 to 1 1/2 inches of additional height for more surface area to dissipate heat from which I am sure helps a lot.

The stable system was using ocz reaper which has excellent cooling and is overall pretty good for overclocking in general.

Hey guys, question. Does anyone know if a Phenom II 965 will support 1600 MHz RAM? My ram has been underclocked to 1333 MHz by default.

Assuming you have overclocked the CPU using the multi only and leaving the FSB at default, then you need to bump up the FSB/DRAM Ratio in the Cell Menu,

until the ram is running at 1600.

Alternatively if you did use just the multi you can back it off and raise the FSB to get back to your current 3.8 (looking at your specs), and adjusting both till you get the CPU to 3.8 and the ram at or close to 1600.

ok. the RAM says it would run 1600 @ 1.65V, should I manually set this or leave it on auto? also do I have to change any timings manually based on the XMP information in the BIOS?

edit: was easier than i thought it would be. Thanks for the info though.

I built a system with the phenom II X6 1090T Black and an ASUS M5A88-V EVO mobo. The mobo comes with software and bios to overclock the cpu from 3.2GHz(normal) up to 3.9GHz and the dram settings. I had problems with my dram sticks but that's fixed. I tried to overclock both but the system was unstable, windows 7 hp64 bit didn't want to cooperate either. I'm not expert or knowledgable on overclocking. I could use some help on that too.
