All hardware you have has to be mapped into memory to access resources, which is between 3-4GB in an x86 system. In an x86-64 system this memory hole is remapped over 4GB, assuming your BIOS supports it and you have a 64-bit OS and your hardware is compatible (which it probably is). Also, in a 32-bit system, apps can only access 2GB. With a 64-bit system, this is lifted and 7 can also access more memory for itself.
