Windows 7: System repair disk problem

03 Aug 2010   #21

MS Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 64-bit

Here's the write-up:

1) Insert the System Repair UFD into a usb port.
2) Shutdown your computer.
3) Boot up your computer.
Immediately start hitting the F12 key
Choose USB from the menu.
4) Wait while a mini-version of Windows is loaded and finally the System Recovery Options dialog appears.
5) Remove the UFD. The UFD is no longer needed.
will show Select a keyboard input method |
NEXT button
will search your system for installed versions of Windows.
select the Use recovery tools that can help fix problems starting Windows radio button |
NEXT button
will show Choose a recovery tool and list the following |
System Repair
System Restore
System Image Recovery
Windows Memory Diagnostic
Command Prompt

10) Click on System Repair

If it doesn't appear it is because you are running the DVD/flash stick and not booting it.

Here is the tute I use: Repair CD - System Repair Disk

I find that tutorial to be scrambled and rambling. Some great screenshots.

Also does not cover the booting from a UFD.

Karl - I only used that tutorial so they have screenshots to find what I am referring to.

I've now found the official SevenForums tutorial: System Recovery Options

With the screenshots they already know what they're looking for so suddenly it doesn't seem so scary.

The only trouble is that is not the screens I get when I boot from my System Repair disc.

They are close but no cigar. I can get where I want to go but for someone who hasn't been there, they can get confused when the screens and screen sequence is not precisely what is in the tutorial.

The tutorial is excellent but needs to be updated/amplified to cover the actual System Repair disc operation and the slight difference when booting from UFD.

System Repair Disk not booting into repair options
Created it with no problems, apparently at least. My BIOS is set to boot from CD why won't my machine boot from the system repair disk? There were no errors when disk was created. My machine just boots to windows. Anyone else experience this with Win 7 Professional? Any tips?
